I got out to the range today and shot some 50-95 loads with black powder. Bullet is the Accurate 51-350CL 20/1 lubed with SPG and sized .512 with a .030 vegi wad. Primers were Winchester Large Rifle Magnum. Cases are formed from Starline 50 Alaskan. The compressed load of 91 grains of Goex Cartridge shot pretty well however it is only good for 5 rounds or so before the bore fouls (not enough lube for a lube ring at the muzzle). I also bought some Old E. and tried 82 grains which didn't group near as well. I plan on working with the Old E. some more but would like to ask those of you that use it does it like lots of compression?

I use the 2F OE in my Shiloh .50-90 and .2" compression is where the ladder loads make some very nice round 5 shot groups and that falls pretty close for all the calibers I shoot.
It will also have a spot with heavy compression also.
You can treat the OE like Swiss.
The .50 Alaskan, Are they formed from .458 Win cases with the belt turned off?

Scuse me butting in here --Starline 50 Alaskan was advertised a while back at pretty reasonable price - I almost bought some on the excuse I could reform them to 45/75 - but I have enough of that already and 50 AK brass sitting there unloved ............ woulda had to go lookin for a gun to shoot it in :bigsmyl2:might be that led to a matrimonial problem........................................... ...

50 Ak base diameter = .553
458 w base diameter = .513 - the band is still only .532 ----just a tad small to work?

The 50AK is basically a shortened 50-110 case (less volume for smokeless powder), and just a little less trimming is why I went with them.

Good Morning
We have a 50-95 Chappy (high #) and this is what we learned with 350 grainers over our 150 rounds down range.
We stopped using Goex 2F fast and switched to 3F. Less fouling and through shooting over our Chrony 3F Goex duplicates the old velocities far better. about 1/8 compression. Cereal box wad
Enough 3F to reach 1465 fps which is the most accurate velocity with our rifle. Our rifle shoots under 2.5" at 100 off cross sticks. 2.3 inches is seen when I get real serious. Have shot 5" groups at 200 routinely.

Dip or smear some lube on the nose of the first round and chamber by hand. Takes care of lube to the muzzle. We wipe after 20 rounds with 3F.
Took off the ladder sight and installed a full Buckhorn. Put white bead on front. 200 yard 8" gong is easy off cross sticks.

I also ordered some Old E. fffg so I will try that along with the ffg.

Thanks

I've been impressed with OE. It is the ONLY black powder that regulates in my old 11.15 X 60R double rifle, including Swiss, without duplexing. All the others shot apart. OE crossed and I was able to reduce the powder charge by 5 grains and both barrels shot together.

From what Ive been told Old E is Goex powder designed to compete with higher end Swiss powders.
Yes, from my tests with a trapdoor and Sharps, Old E likes compression. I use Old E 2F. .175 is typically what I compress it with, and a .030 veggie wad.

Would love to see a video of that!

Unfortunately it is a Uberti reproduction and not an original Winchester.

No likes’ that I can find. Marriage is better than guns. Is 50 AK . Hope it’s not permanent. That’s gettin’ pretty big pal. Can you handle the recoil subject.
