Got a nice bucking this afternoon with my Ruger American 358 win, loaded with 230gr Ranchdog going right at 2000fps.

Excellent. Did he run far or drop on the spot?

went a bit farther than i wanted, I hit the deer a bit farther back than i intended on a steep quartering to me shot, clipped one lung, destroyed the liver and exited out through offside ham. Went about 70-80 yards and left a terrible blood trail. Had a narrow area in which to shoot and had i waited any longer he would passed by with out any shoot opportunity so i took it.

Exactly! The one thing you can be assured of is adequate penetration with that combination.

The American 358 is one of a limited run that Grices put out a couple years ago. A good friend of mine along with my father in law both got one as well, all three are tack drivers. Mine will easily keep three of the 230gr ranch dogs inside an inch at a 100yards, quite often with two touching. Only down side is that the factory magazine didn’t feed the blunt nose bullets all that well. I called Ruger on the suggestion of another forum member here and they shipped me out a couple of the 450 bushmaster magazines and they feed the flat nose bullets just fine. They do extend a bit below flush but not enough to bother. 271662

Job well done! Yes those wide flat nosed ranch dog bullets do work well

The 'thwack' is very distinctive from that 230 grain flat nose! hc18flyer

very true, regardless of what that bullet hits it makes quite wack when it lands.

Nice! Glad those mags worked for you! Shot a spike with my Ruger 358 at 30yards using the Lee 200 at 2300 fps or so. Double lunger quartering away. Turned a rib into shrapnel. Deer made it 60-70 yards before piling up. Found the boolit in the dirt. Mushroomed nicely. Put a cheapo brake on it and it feels like a 30-30 despite having quite a bit more power. Amazing how much cast boolit power in a nice 7 lb package.

What did you end going with for a brake? I might be interested in trying one, that light rifle gets lively with some of the 230gr loads.
