I recently acquired a 1960 vintage Colt Police Positive Special and the stock grips need to go. Has anyone here had any success modifying say a set Of Mustangs or Herrett's for the later style short frame to fit an earlier one? I have a set of Mustangs somewhere around the place that might serve if I can chisel out enough wood. Failing that,I guess I'll be sending a check to EAGLE Grips.

Can't go wrong with Eagle Grips, I have a set on my 1972 Colt Detective Special

Many grips made for short gripframes can me cut out for a long grip, provided they're long enough to reach the bottom of the longer gripframe - but, you might want to shop around for a set of Herrett Shooting Ace grips (now discontinued) for the long grip D-frame Colts.

Despite their looks, I found them to be very comfortable on my Colt DS because the extra wood over the rear of the gripframe moved my hand back far enough from the trigger for E Z manipulation while shooting.

Herrett also made the larger Shooting Star grips for Colts.
