I recently inherited several bottles of liquid alox. I’m thinking I would thin it out and dip some boil it’s. What should I use as a thinner.

Mineral Spirits although I have played a bit with isopropol alcohol. You want the 90% + stuff.

I tried with some 60% and got a layer of water on the bottom. The lube on top worked just fine however!
I had some cheap dollar store bottles of alcohol and was just testing to see if it would work.
At 1$ per bottle it was cheaper than the mineral spirits.

Check out the various threads about "Ed's LL". Seems a product called ? Lundmark ?, or some such can be mixed with it.

Mineral Spirits is what I use.

Exactly what I have also used.

I have been given bottles that were dried up. I peeled the hard brown puck out of the plastic and dropped in a mayo jar and added mineral spirits. Every time I walked by I agitated it. in a couple weeks it was liquid alox again..

Try heating the bottle up in a pan of hot water until it's liquid, then add Mineral Spirits and stir.
Mineral Spirits is what is used at the factory.

I'm sure this is a stupid question but what is the reason to thin the Lee Liquid Alox? Is it so that it will dry quicker so it won't be so sticky?

That would be Ben’s liquid lube. I think you got it confused with Ed’s red. What is the liquid lube the other is a bore cleaner and lubricant both of them are excellent by the way

Regarding why we need to thin it, the solvent in it finds a way out of the bottle, over time. After several years you have a solid mass in the bottle.

As another said.. The MS is just replacing the lost original solvent. If you want faster drying, cut the MS with map the. 50/50 ms/map the. Add a little to the thickened alox and mix to desired consistency. For hard dried also..use MS and time/ agitation.

If its not to badly dehydrated, soaking in a cup of very hot water sometimes will loosen it up
Otherwise, a little deodorized mineral spirits will do the trick.
