new older leupold scope put on my older ruger # 3 in 45-70

i put this 1.75-6 x leupold to replace my other scope on my # 3 as this rifle shoots great groups. the load is 50 grs H-4198 with a 300 gr hp bullet that cronies at 1900 + fps, i have shot heavier loads, but this load is just plain accrutt. under MOA and kills like chain lighting. this three shot group was the last three shots at 100 yards from a lead sled, i will make a very small adjustment before hunting.271074271075

Hard to beat a Leupold scope. I know the first one spoiled me for anything else.

i used to be a 3-9x swift(back in the day they were over the counter guarantee). when the otc guarantee went the way of the dinosaur, i went to leopold. a 3-9x is good, but a 2-7x is great.

Hello Guys,

I keep reading that the #3 in 45-70 should have never been built.
Years ago I purchased a N.O.S. in the box for my son, and fell in love with it.
It wasn't long before I had one of my own.
Of course with failing eyesight, I ended putting my Leopold 2x7 Compact on it.

i would buy one in 38-55 also if they came up. the tc encore in 45-70 is the one in the middle, the top is a tc encore in .308 and the bottom is a TC G2 in .375 JDJ.271295

The only problem with Ruger single shot rifles in .45-70 is they are strong enough to be safe, but entirely too light if you try what I call "Elmer Keith Memorial Loads" in them. I know my No. 1 was, and a No. 3 is even lighter.

Keep the loads reasonably close to factory, and they are very fun guns.

I wouldn’t normally use the terms “fun gun” and Ruger #3 in the same sentence. I know of at least 1 that passed through 4 sets of hands before expending a half a box (10 rounds) of factory ammo... and I shot two rounds of that! I sincerely wish Dad hadn’t sold that gun, but the 327 Fed Mag hadn’t been invented back then, and the consensus was that no one in their right mind would actually shoot that beast. It killed at both ends! :?

Way back when Ruger was still making them, and I didn't know anything about rebarreling a rifle, I wanted one in .22 Hornet. Being a low paid teenager, I made do with an H&R Model 158.

i run leupold scopes on most of my rifles and a few shotguns with no problems.

Have had three No 3's in 30/40 Krag and still have the last two. Full power 30/40 loads are grim with the metal butt plate and original stock but not too bad on the one with a pistol grip stock ala the No 1, and these both have the added weight of a scope. Fortunately I only shoot a few full power loads a year getting ready for deer season, most of the time cast 170's at 1600 or 115's sub sonic.

Can't imagine loads at full potential in a45/70, makes my shoulder hurt thinking about it.

Yep to all. I rebarreled mine. Put a 27" .375 barrel on it and had it chambered for .375 JDJ by J.D. Jones. The extra barrel adds enough weight that she doesn't kick too bad with sane loads. With the longer barrel the rifle is the same length as my .30-06 with a 22" barrel.

The only time I have actually broken a crosshair, (I've had many other scopes break, just not the crosshair) was a Simmons Shotgun scope on my No.1 in .45-70. I think it was a 4X, if memory serves.

I put a 2.5 Leupold on it, no more problems. Wish I had that scope back.

I believe I fired a string of 18 shots the day I sighted in my #3 in with the Leopold Scope.
I know I flinched once, my son couldn't believe I kept shooting till it was zeroed in.
My shoulder was "Black & Blue" for a few days, I did survive and I love shooting it.
I shoot an RCBS 45-300-FN on top of 55 gr of IMR 3031, seems to be a very accurate load.
One thing to remember it is a single shot, so your not going to blast off a bunch at one time normally.

i test loads useing a lead sled that takes most of the recoil out(not all). and then go to the sand bags for a finial check on load. i never had a problem with the leupold scopes, but have had several problems with the rings allowing slipping, retighting solved that.271643271644. photo is of my winchester 85 short rifle in 45-70.
