Does anybody know what the twist rate is on the Army 50 CF Rolling Block Pistols?
Also, do you think that cartridges could be made from cut down 500 Linebaugh brass?

I know the .50-42 1867 USN Carbines used a 1/42 twist. Suspect the pistols would be the same or slower.

I was under the impression that the .50 cal RRB pistols mostly used a cutdown .50-70 case, but since the .348Win Parent for the .500 Linebaugh is based off one of the .50 cal Winchester rounds, MAYBE. I think all .50 cal brass is spendy, so do a careful dimension check before ordering a bunch.

No real idea on the twist, sorry.

I thought I could help with the case issue, but maybe not. I have a reloading press and dies for the 50 US Pistol cartridge along with several cast boolits and brass. Two different cases, one is an inch overall in length and boxer primed, the other is 3/4 inch overall and berdan primed. The rims are the same and neither have any markings.

And it appears I have not photographed this press, another project add to my list.

I can provide case measurements if needed, and pictures.

Twist rates are determined by bullet length and velocity. A short barreled pistol is going to have much lower velocity than a rifle so the twist rate would need to be faster. The original twist for the 50-110 was 1 in 54" with the 300 grain bullet. This was called an express rifle because it was pushing a light bullet at high ( black powder ) velocity. A pistol with the same bullet may need a 1 in 20" twist or faster.

.

Remington's .50-70 RB rifling twist is about 1:42".

Groove diameter tends to be large.

The 450gr bullet is as long enough to reliably stabilize at this twist rate.

Thanks for the input.
I was seriously considering getting one of these, but one of our dogs just tore his ACL and will require a $1200 surgery!!
So there goes my play money :(
