View Full Version : My fave .30-30 load

I'm a big fan of the .30 WCF, and hunt with it more than any other cartridge. The best load with boolits I have found for my rifles is 17 grains of extinct IMR 4759 under the Lee C309-170-RF sized to .310. LLA or any stick type lube works just fine, can't see any difference in accuracy or fouling. I can make golf ball size groups at 65 yards using either of my Winchester 94's with Williams receiver sights and shooting sticks all day long. For my meager abilities that is quite good. According to my chronograph, this load clocks a consistent 1650 fps so basically .32-40 power level. Haven't tried it in my scoped micro groove Marlins, yet, will do so soon.

I have about a year's worth of 4759 left. I'm wondering, what would be a good powder and load to duplicate this? Where I live Hodgdon powders are easier to find than others so I have been thinking about 4198 or 4227. Blue Dot is usually available and works great in .357's for my Marlin 1894, I wonder if it could be used in a mild .30 WCF load such as this?

16gr 4227 should get you there. I've used 13gr and shoots a little low for me but accurate.

I get the best groups with 30-32 grains 748. Dunno the speed but the latter will be closer to 2000. I get less than 2" groups at 70 yards with it using the 31141.

Thanks, will look into those.

IMR 3031 is a possible choice.

Reloaded 7 does it for me.

Leverevolution is my #1 favorite powder with the 311041and C309-170 in the 30-30. I think it's often overlooked, but it's a great powder. Higher velocities with lower pressures and outstanding accuracy. Beyond that RL7 and 748 are hard to beat.

Thanks. I have some Reloder 7 as my .223 likes it, also have some H4198. Guess I'll try those first!

I didn't think 3031 gave as good of accuracy as 748, but it was acceptable. I bought a jug when I had the chance as it is a broad range powder compared to 748. I use 3031 acceptably in both 30-30 and 30-06. I don't shoot my 30-30 for groups much, I mostly shoot it plinking or for an occasional hunt. 32 grains 748 and the 31141 duplicates factory recoil and poi for 170 grain jacketed in my rifle.

IMR 4895.

Some guys really rave about Lever Evolution, but I've never used it.

I use 32.0gr of W748 behind a 170gr boolit...or bullet. Both had POI less than 1" apart at 50 yards.

This load is what Winchester loads their 170gr loads to. ~2000fps.

I just started to reload for the 30-30. I don’t really have a favorite yet, but this load shoots well out of my Marlin. It’s a Ranch Dog 165gr GC/PC over a compressed charge of “older” H-414.

I bought three pounds of this powder for thirty bucks. I needed to find a use for it. It is a slow powder but it actually works pretty good when slightly compressed in the 30-30 case.

My suggestion of RL7 was based on OPs reference to a replacement for 4759, I would chose 4895 for factory level loads. No idea about Leverlution as I am trying to simplify and 4895 is basic for my needs.

My best groups (so far) with that same bullet have resulted from 25 grains of 3031 and 29 grs of W748. But what I love about my 30-30 is that it isn't very picky about what powder it consumes.

I got the best groups with 30 grains 748, but settled on 32 cause it was just a bit larger but the trajectory matched factory ammo. I like being able to shoot either without a sight adjustment.

In the 32 spl the cousin of the 30-30 best load with cast I ever found was the rcbs 170 and almost a full case of IMR 4350 not top velocity but shot better than anything I've tried accuracy wise .

Savage 340 18.5" barrel 1:12 twist, 311041, 34.5g leverevolution for 1 ragged hole @ 50yds.
Hoping for the same in a 788 or with any of the other powders mentioned.
Thanks for the thread.

I have tried several powders in my 30-30 but when I tried Revolution, I found my powder. At least in my rifle, it has been the most accurate powder I have ever used. my experience anyway, james

748 for full throttle jacketed, and Reloader #7 for cast or plated bullets.

As a replacement for 4759, I recommend either that old standby, 2400, or else the afore-mentioned RL-7. But I use a lot of 748 in mine. The RCBS 30-180 FN over 30 grains is very accurate, and is what I use when hunting with the 30-30. For funsies, the 311-465 or 311-466 with 17.5 grains of 2400 is hard to beat.

Look for dogmower's new post; he wants to sell 6 lb of 4759.

Same bullet R-15 powder 28.5g and 31.5g were the sweet spots for me. I am using S&B primers since I bought 5 bricks when they were $19. Nice full case so no filler needed. Shoots well in both of my Savage bolt actions and mossberg and marlin lever action.

10 gr of Unique may be lower vel than you're looking for but it is the go to for me in the .30 WCF, 171 NOE and .32 Win Spl, 178 NOE. Although Universal is not an equivalent to Unique, in this application 10 gr Universal gave the same results. Using 150 gr JFP boolits 37 gr BL-C(2) is my sweet spot. We shoot lots and lots of .30 WCF and .32 Win Spl. Tried to buy .30-30 ammo lately?

I use 11.0 grains Unique in my cast loads and 3031 for j-words.

I have been real happy with a 150-175 gr bullet and 15 gr of WC 820.

When I had my Win94 I used 4895 and Blue Dot. Used the Hodgdon table for reduced loads with the 4895 and 170gn cast or jacketed. Used small loads of Blue Dot and 170 cast for plinking.
