I got a 1973 Winchester 94 the other day and after admiring it went to the range and shot a few. Everything worked well but I noticed the bottom metal ( the bottom link) doesn't close all the way. Is this a problem a gunsmith should look at?

A photo would help; but, yes, since all of mine close flush with the bottom of the receiver I'd say that it should be disassembled and inspected.

That gun has a safe feature that you have to hold lever closed to fire ,perhaps that is your problem? /Ed

If you hold the lever closed, does the link sit flush? If so, then that is probably just a matter of loose tolerances that many later 94's are afflicted with. The good news is, the rifle may still shoot really well. I have an 80's 94 that has a wobbly mag tube and looks like it spent a few years sliding around in the bed of a truck but shoots as well as any other. Try the Lee C309-170-RF, my 94's love it!

Seen it plenty on guns with a lot of wear. If I recall correctly it's a worn lever or pin that connects the lever to bottom. The bottom plate doesn't come closed all the way but the lever does, and the locking block doesn't come all the way up, letting the bolt stay a bit open causing excessive headspace.

As it should be. Sorry about the flash...
