Need your help and opinions for casting and loads for subsonic 300 blackout for the hog problem on my ranch.....going the route with Ruger American Ranch Rifle, scope and suppressor.....with the price of bullets it seems like cast boolits should be the ticket....and subsonic is perfect for cast boolits....need your thoughts as I will be making my brass from 223 and I have the powder and primers....so all I need is your thoughts on the boolit, its weight, its design. Also appreciate your loads and your accuracy.....thanks in advance as I have several months to wait so putting all the components should be the trick to pass the time....Paul

I picked up a 240gr mold from Accurate that seems pretty decent. I am temped to get it hollow pointed though, just to have another option.

I picked up a NOE 242gr plain base flat nose.

If I wasn't fighting a slipped disc I'd volunteer to help harvest hogs.

I got a mold from Accurate for 300BO also, went with http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=31-215E-D.png

I powder coat so I didn’t really want one with lube grooves. It has a pretty big flat nose and I am having problems with it catching on the ARs feed ramps. I think I need to do a little Dremel work on the ramps. A boolit with more of a point may be better.

Never heard of a Hog Problem. You got some that don't taste good?

I wish I lived within 300 miles of you ,, the giant ground hogs sure would be fun,,,

I just got the Lee mold that they say is especially for the 300BO,, it is a ~ L O N G ~ bullet, so it works well in the magazine..

Bullet Mold TL309-230-5R 30 Caliber

When I opened the mold for the first time,, I thought they had drilled all the way through the block,, the bullet is so long,,
I figured I was gonna have to hold my finger on the bottom to keep the lead from leaking out!! :groner:

I tried it on about 30 or so bullets, they SURE look like the right shape,, Very similar to the Sierra 210 grain Match King.

I am gonna wait for the temp controller before I cast more,,

More on my experience with the mold from Accurate I mentioned above:
They are dropping @ 225gr. I am powder coating.
I am using 1680 powder for now, though I have read that N120 is better for subs. Plan on trying that. Still working on my load but right now I am at 12gr to get around 1100fps, which is higher than all the load data I can find.

Buckwheat, I have a friend playing with such a project for the same reasons. Discussion here:

His barrel has a 10” twist.

I’ve been plinking hogs for many moons, most of which have fallen to the dreaded CCI CB Short. Precision is the name of the game.

Got some caster oil you can feed them. :groner:
I'm in DFW, be glad to help. My hog gun is 10" AR pistol with 170gr PB FB RD style @ 1450 fps. I can also run them 1k. Isn't worth the $ for the can for me but bang & whack on the backer board sounds about the same. Talked to many hog shooters(they use everything) guy next to me at range yesterday using 17 HMR AR. Anyway, my conclusion is over 50 yds, subs/cans don't help any. Head/neck or 3 sq ' kill area. Full power 308W is pretty quiet with can but muffs still needed.
So basically I'm not convinced of the heavy subs in BO. Not much more 'effective' and more problems.

Agree. I can’t see a subsonic .300 BO take down a fair sized hog without a head or neck shot.

I used a 225 gr from cast bullet engineering when I loaded sub's for my 300 blackout.

why would you want subsonic loads to take out boar. I would think hit em with the HAM'R

Why subsonic? Why sit down to eat,,? Why use a remote control with a TV, ? Why, ? Comfort,,
I do not have a silencer, but, subsonic rounds,, 300BO,, or 22LR,, subsonic is more comfortable even with hearing protection.

I shoot the 300 BO with a 210 GR Sierra MK, and a little CFEBLK powder,, the neighbors do not fuss,,
I shoot the 300 Win Mag, with 150 GR factory ammo,, the neighbors are ringing the phone off the hook,,,

I've killed many a hog with a 22 L.R. in the traps we set and maintain....subsonic and suppressor offers more potential shots at more that one hog in the sounder as long as there are no squeals....if there is all bets are off.....when they are in a sounder, generally the smallest shoats are first followed by the progressive bigger hogs......you start at the back of the pack and work forward......

Well, it might be that there are legal restraints? Such as my endeavors to remove them from a state preserve bordered by residential properties on 2 sides. 1600 acres worth.

200+ and counting. One pig took two shots, the rest were a single shot.

if smacking them means anything to you. I use the rcbs 130 spitzer gas check and run it at around 1900 fps. I havent killed anything with that bullet but it sure smacks the steel plates and shoots 2moa or better at a 100 yards out of my american and my 16 inch blackout. So far the only killing ive done with the bo is with the 110 barnes. It kills all out of proportion to the size of that round.
