View Full Version : How hard to push PB cast in 308?

I have one near MOA load in 308 with the NOE Ranchdog 311-180 as a PB Boolit behind 18.5 grains of AA9. I know I could get better as I’m not weight sorting and shooting in mixed 308 brass. Load shoots just under 1800 FPS. Would love to push a 210 at 22-2400 FPS.

Anyone pushing plain base 308s heavy and hard?

Ar10, 2400 fps with GC 168gr, PCd.

What powder and charge? Think it could do that without GC?

I did a comparison with velocity and a 160gn PB bullet (modified Lee 180 mold). Powder coated.

At 1800fps it shot into 1-1.5" at 100yd. At 2450fps it could only do 3-4" at 100yd.

I would think not. A gas check is called for at those velocities. Pushing a 210 gr bullet to 2400 FPS from a .308 sounds like above maximum pressure for a Jacketed bullet, much less a cast bullet.

Lyman lists loads for the 301620, 200gn paper patched bullet at 2466fps max with IMR4064, 51k cup.

That's why I wrote the caveat " sounds like".[emoji16]

I was agreeing. If a 200gn bullet is maxed out at a little over 2400fps then a 230gn would be way over.

Ten-four.

I've pushed up to the max. allowed in the Lyman book for 170s & 190s, but they're more accurate going a little slower.

For target shooting, I'd be happy with what ya got.

30gr h4895 GC only.

I use a similar mold to your noe ranch dog mold. Mine is a single cavity nose pour mold that casts a pb bullet. They are extremely accurate at lower speeds. Anything over 1900fps, not so much & this is from a 30" bbl'd 308w.

You start getting over 2400fps with cast bullets and things get interesting.

I shoot a 7.62X39 with a 130 grain Lyman boolit to 2000 fps. It is powder coated and does not have a gas check. No leading.
