View Full Version : Re-using Pulled Primers?

I made a mess. I traded for 400 or so pieces of .44 mag brass a while ago. It was all cleaned and deprimed. I assumed it had be re-sized. I asked the owner and he wasn't sure. I'm certain I checked it...…..or at least I thought I did. Fast forward to last night. Primed it up and went to start loading today. Bullet dropped into the case up to the tip. Further investigation revealed only about 25% had been resized. So, I carefully deprimed them. Is there any reason I can't re use these primers?

I do when needed with no problems

I've reused primers, and every one went off. I wouldn't use them for serious ammo, but for targets, why not? YMMV

might as well try it. I would have removed guts from sizing die and resize them that way.

I don't like doing it either, but have in the past.

I'm careful removing them, but putting 'em back into another case was never a problem.

Frambif nailed it. Just remove the de-capping rod and use the sizer and expander as normal.

Yes, I have also re-used primers that have previously beed seated.

I would have just removed the decapping stem and sized them primed. I have used many pulled primers and haven't had an issue.

^ I would have done what Bazoo said.

Pull the stem, leave the primers in.

I recall brass coming primed from the factory. Just remove the decapping pin and proceed!
That said, I have liberated quite a few primers and reused them, I didn't do anything special other than catch them on a folded piece of cloth.

Because I deprime with universal deprimer, wet clean and dry and then prime with a hand primer, all the pistol cases I size are already primed. I just do as suggested and remove the deprimer rod, and load on my turret press

I de-cap and reuse primers occasionally (more now :) )

Just go slow when you remove the live primers. I've never had one go off

Remove the decapper pin from the size die, and resize.

Well shoot, sorry about that.

Yes. Just remove the depriming pin from the resizing die and have at it.

Yep, remove decapping rod, resize, neck expand... I have used deprimed primers, but for practice, non-critical applications.

I have used 10's of thousands of primers pulled from USGI 30 Carbine brass. I use them in loading "plinking" 5.56/.223. The only problem noticed was that here and there one had the anvil pressed further into the cup from the depriming process. When said primer is seated into the 5.56/.223 case it might go a touch further into the primer pocket. Some non-AR's can give failures to fire as their firing pin doesn't protrude as far from the bolt face to ensure a good firing pin hit as does an AR firing pin. I'd take the non firing rounds and simply use them in an AR.

Thanks guys. Removing the die guts never occurred to me. Stupid obvious. I knocked them out without issue. Just took my time and removed all primers from the bench every hundred or so.

Sometimes I've crushed primed cases so carefully punching the primers out was necessary for salvage. No problems appreciated so far.

With no intent to bust on you, but I would think a case gauge would have caught the unsized cases and saved you some frustration and extra work. Hindsight is always 20/20 of course and I wonder if I would have practiced my preach. I like to think I would have though.

After pulling boolits, I remove the decapper and resize to make my process work the same when I reload them.

I have had to pull cartridges down many times, and I have always re-used the primers. Disclaimer: When I remove live primers, I use a very light pressure on the press ram. I basically allow the weight of my hand and forearm to raise the ram. I have never had a problem with this method.
