Today is opening day of muzzleloader here in VA. I went out to my hunting spot where I have a ground blind made from pallets. It sits between a small pond and the property line for the railroad. There is a nice clear cut strip that it overlooks, under a power line. When I got out there, it was a little more overgrown than I envisioned. While pondering what to do, I heard a deer blowing up near the train track. I decided to back out and move further down a creek into a real thick, brushy area. I came across a nice rub line and found a nice cedar to sit under. I sat there for about an hour or so and decided I would push in a little further. Found another cedar to sit under, so I scraped all the leaves and sticks aside and did a short rattle sequence as I settled in. About 10 minutes later I caught movement about 30 yards ahead of me. I saw that it was a deer, so I waited for it to get behind a tree and raised my muzzleloader. As the deer came around the tree, he was facing me head on and stopped. At this point he was 25 yards away and he knew I was something that didn't belong there. I decided he would look nice in my freezer, so I put one right through his chest. He turned and ran about 20 yards and fell over dead. Didn't recover the Boolit as I believe it lodged in his stomach and I wasn't curious enough to go rooting for it. I was using my NEF Huntsman 50cal muzzleloader with a Lee TL430-240-SWC in a sabot. Alloy was 50/50 COWW/SOWW air cooled and powder coated. Load was 60g of 777. Very happy with the performance of the Boolit and alloy. Just started casting this past spring, so this is all very new to me. This forum has provided a plethora of information that has helped me get to this point, so thank you to those who contribute to this great forum!

Yep, that did the trick. Hard to imagine they can whirl and run after such damage but most I've shot in the heart do, even torn up worse than that. Glad you are having such a good time casting your own and now being successful in the process. Keep us posted on your other cast achievements as the season continues.

Howdy Neighbor!! My wife & I both went out this morning & neither of us saw anything & heard very few shots, most at very long distance. Congrats to you & your accomplishments!

Good shooting , I’m in the Shenandoah Valley and I didn’t hear but a couple of shots around the house . I didn’t go Sat morning because I was working up deer from Fri evening. Hope to get my Dad out with me on them next weekend or maybe one day this week . Good shooting , good eating and go drop the hammer on another one .

Congratulations, any Harvest with one of your own cast projectiles is a trophy! I also congratulate you on your rifle and powder charge choice of 60gr. It has long been proven that you do not need Maximum loads to cleanly harvest deer. Job well done on all fronts!!!

Thanks for sharing your hunt! Our opener is next weekend and I hope to use my 30-30 and a cast boolit.

Thanks to all for the kind words! I have been learning a lot lately about how modern firearms and ammo are generally poised for the most extreme hunting situations, which is overkill for me. It is nice to be able to tailor a load to my weapon and hunt (typically 50 yards or less, sub 200lb deer). My shoulder can certainly tell the difference. I think I will clean and put up my muzzleloader for the season. I have 5 rifles that are itching to get their first deer with cast when rifle season opens in a few weeks!

Congratulations. I've killed quite a few with my cast in a muzzle loader, mostly with the Lyman Plains bullet in .50 caliber, but a few like yours with .44s in a sabot and a few .545s. Muzzle loaders are at their best with cast.

Cast works well on deer in the small bores too, my first was with a .30-30, but I'm kinda hooked on it now.

How do you like that 777 powder ?

This is my first year using 777. For the past 18 years I've used pyrodex pellets. I do like the 777 better and find cleanup much easier. I would have gone with BH209, but my LGS wanted $50 for a bottle!

3 of the 5 rifles are 30cal, so there is a good chance, the next one will hopefully fall to a 30cal cast boolit!

Hey hey congrats!!! Good shooting and somehow they seem to taste better when you have more work in the preparation such as casting or loading your own.

That will be great eating, way to go! That TL240SWC has been a favorite of mine for years. I’ve taken a few turkeys with it and I’m glad to see it used on a deer. I’ve used it in 44-40, . 44 Special and .44 Magnum and it has shot very well unsized and tumble lubed in all three cases.

Good morning and Congratulations !
Any slug in caliber .40 something + that weights in grains about the weight of the target in pounds chugging along at 850+ fps placed in the right spot is going to be well appreciated at the table.

He's safely in my freezer now. I did save the liver out this time around. It has been soaking in a salt bring since Saturday. I think I will slice some up and have liver and onions for the first time ever.

Did country fried liver & onions for lunch. I think I'll be keeping the liver from now on!
