Welcome to Cast boolits Humper0891

here's a link to an online copy of a reloading manual

http://marvinstuart.com/firearm/Manuals/Bullet%20Casting/Lyman%20Cast%20Bullet%20Handbook%20-%203rd%20Edition%20-%201980%20-%20Reduce.pdf

as always start with the lowest load and work your way up.

these boolits usually call for the use of gas checks

The above advice is good advice. You haven't said what type of rifle (bolt, semi-auto, single shot) or what the twist rate might be. I have a T/C bolt rifle with a 1/12 twist and it shoots that boolit quite well at a velocity of about 1900 fps which, of course, won't function a semi-auto. Most semi auto's won't function at an MV below 2400 fps so I restrict my "black rifle" to jacketed. I have especially enjoyed shooting the Lee boolit in my bolt gun with a faster burning pistol type powder (about 8 gr. of Red Dot). Powders like 4198 and RE-7 also have shot well with cast. Often getting a 223 to shoot cast can be an adventure to get right because every barrel has its own personality which you will have to discover. Have fun!! Welcome to to our fraternity!

Welcome to the club! I have the lee 55 grain mould and use the boolit gaschecked in a .222 Rem. (slightly smaller case volume) and have found it accurate in the 1:14” twist barrel. One of the Lyman cast bullet manuals will probably offer more data for a 55 gr. Bullet but it won’t be the lee design. By searching posts here you will find data for that specific boolit. Let us know what rifle and twist rate you are casting for and if you’re interested in load recommendations - there’s a great deal of experience among the members here regarding the use of Boolits.

I have used 20 grs of h335 under a lyman 55 gr boolit in both an ar and bolt gun. ar is 7 twist and bolt gun is 12 twist.gas checks are necessary.
