this was an interesting find on the beach

Was on a fishing trip last week to the outer banks in NC and they found this washed up on the sand , was about 1/4 mile south from were I was staying in Buxton

That stuff washes up all the time. Some island in the Bahamas was used for bombing practice back in the day. Ordnance washes up every time there is a storm.

From time to time they find all kinds of things like that here.
Lots of ordnance dumped off shore in the past.
When we were little, we used to get camping at the beach parks.
Sometimes we would find these small cylinders.
We would gather them up, and throw them in the fire.
Poof!!!!!
Later found out they were powder, from powder bags, for big ship guns.
About 10 years ago some parent made a big stink about it.
Military had to clean up as many as they could find.
Truck loads full.
They still turn up from time to time.

They find ordnance here all the time. There was a naval training base on the barrier island, and at the end of the war, they dumped tons of munitions in the ocean.

Well as an inland dweller we seldom hear about these type of things , thought it interesting being in close proxcimity . Hard to believe those old iron bombs don't just rust away to nothing in a few years in the saltwater seeing as how much corrosion was on my equipment after just a weeks time had a set of pliers in my bag I used once to unhook a fish and was covered in rust in only 5 days

One of the more 'popular' hiking and mountain biking area in the Boise area was a 'range' for many years and was subject to 'sweeps' with 'finds'. That knowledge is now 'forgotten'. Conveniently for the developers and politicians! Anything labeled "Military Reserve" should result in some caution and it is not just because of the 'goathead' thorns!

Yup. They lost another one way back in the late 60s if I recall in the Sea of Japan. The bomb plus the Skyhawk it was mounted on.

[smilie=s: And lets not forget all the crap,crud and corruption that was dumped at the end of WW1 and WW11.Like all the different gas and HE shells and aerial bombs by the 100`s of tons.The ships that that stuff was loaded on were just taken out and sunk.And not all that far off shore.

When I was a schoolkid,a friends father worked dumping WW2 munitions.....they had to carry cases of stuff from underground stores by the river onto barges at the end of a jetty.......not alot got to the barge,it was just dumped over the side of the jetty in the river mud ,later dredger sand pumped in over the lot ,and new wharves built there.....The kid was very popular at school ,he could get you any kind of ammo,mostly 50 and 20mm.and lots of tommy gun ammo for home made tommyguns.
