I'm wondering if anyone has tried using a PC'd bullet in a rifle WITHOUT the gas check? In a long rifle (311/173gn bullet) I'd suspect it wouldn't be an issue because there would be plenty (3) of driving bands around the bullet. What say you?

I shoot 311-247-GC without a gas check accurately out of 300 BO. some say GC moke rifle boolits more accurate ( maybe at higher velocities)

The only real way is to try it and see.

They worked fine for me at 1600 fps with out gc. The rifle doesn't shoot cast accurately past that even with a gascheck.

I've done it with my .308 and get poor results at 200yd, ie, 4-6" groups. 180gn Lee bullets. With gas checks they shot 2.5" groups.

I also tried the NOE XCB bullets (165gn) and they did even worse. This was probably due to a lot of the bullet being past the neck.

All guns different. Try it and see!!

I find better accuracy WITH a GC on a GC bullet.

BUT, I have shot PLAIN base bullets PC'd past 2100 fos with ZERO bullet fouling.

Yep, if you want to not mess with GC's then get a plain base mold.

What expander are you using?

GC also protects the bullet base at seating. With GC:s we can get by using only "flaring" to expand, instead of proper NOE / Lyman M -style.

Depending on your expander, GC bullet results without GC can be better than expected IF the bullet doesn't deform (shrink and / or shave coating) while seating it without GC.

Try it and see, carefully measure and inspect some pulled bullets first.

I was going to sell my GC mold because I have a LOT of JHP and PSP's I bought a while ago for my .308's but I'll give them a try now that I'm powder coating.

I shoot PCed gas check boolits without the GC all the time in my .45/70. I have even shot them at times in a 6.5x55se.

Do ya seat the GC before PCing or after?

BOTH... ;). Depends upon the PC & bullet.

A properly coated, cured & sized bullet will be protected from gas cutting, will seal and withstand to torque spinup of 50,000 pounds of chamber pressure in a full power 30/06 load, whether it be gas checked or not. However, a bullet is steered by its base and any imperfection on the bullet's base will affect accuracy.

The benefit of a Perfectly installed gas check is it can provide a completely flat base, but notice the word "Perfectly".
