Ran across a .424 round ball mould in my stuff this week. I've used it for making round balls for "double ball" loads in the .44 Mag by bumping the diameter up.
My question is what was it originally intended to be used in./beagle

Muzzleloaders used to come in a wide variety of bore sizes. I've also seen some true 44 caliber muzzle loading pistols. It gets confusing because a lot of 44 caliber pistols are really 45 caliber.

Old round ball loads, marked 44 GG, for the Marbles Game Getter used a very similar size .425 diameter ball and many folks apparently used them in their 44-40 rifles for small game. Lyman made a .425 mould at one time just for such loads. Or as MSM pointed out it could have been for a muzzleloader.
