Another mold question.... How does the Lyman 358156 mold shoot without a gas check?

I got "OK" accuracy out of the 38 SPL at 800 - 900 fps. Not even close to accuracy potential with a GC or with a real PB bullet such as 358477.

My advice is if you want a PB bullet then get a PB'd bullet mould.

Thanks Larry.... I have a PB coming. It will be good to have the 358156 if I ever
want to go heavy in the 357.

Heavy in either the 38 SPL and 357 Magnum is where the 358156 comes into its own and really shines.

Tom @ Accurate molds makes the Lyman 358156 clone in gas check and plain based . Plain based they drop bullets weighing 162-163 grains using wheel weights . I have 2/ 4cav molds , I like it that much . It is very very accurate . Regards Paul

Leadhead, if you already have an Ideal or Lyman 358156 mould, by all means cast up a batch and try them with the load you are considering and for the purpose you intend. Many of us find the un-checked bullets quite satisfactory for the kind of casual shooting many of us do. :Fire:

Will you get maximum accuracy at long range using heavy charges of powder this way? Of course not, but most of us aren’t doing a lot of our shooting under these criteria. (And yes, I’ve shot more than a few of these “bare bottomed” ‘156s.)

Thanks Froggie.... I bought it on e-bay and it comes in there orange plastic box,
which to me means it's pretty "new". I just hope it doesn't cast under size like
most of there newer molds do..... We'll see when it arrives.

Denny,

I believe I saw that offering. Honestly, I’ve considered buying an extra DC 358156 mould (like the first mould Dad and I ever owned) and having the GC grooves milled out, but it just doesn’t seem like it would be worth the effort. The bullets I get from the original mould shoot fine “naked” for the casual plinking I do with them. I can then add the “copper diaper” to bullets I want to drive hard. Enjoy your new purchase... it’s the one mould I think everyone who owns a 38 or 357 should have. :)

Froggie.... The 358156 mold just arrived and it is brand new.
Still has the sticky lube or whatever it is all over it.
I will clean it up later and make some tonight and see what
they measure.
