I settled on a boolit for my Marlin 1895 CB today. I got to shoot some of the Lee 459-405-HB boolits that I had when I had a NEF BC 45/70. Unlike the .457-340-F boolits that I was shooting the 459-405-HB boolits didn't give me any trouble loading. Here is the only load that I have tried using the 459-405-HB boolits in my Marlin. Load was 27gr. of 4198. I did not chronograph the load. No scope adjustments were made prior to or during shooting. Group is 6 shots from 59 yards.

I'm not sure, but I suspect it was me. :)

I did learn one lesson from this. Don't cast and lube a big bunch of boolits until you know they are keepers. I only have one 45/70 and since the 340 gr. boolits didn't feed 100% they are going back into the pot to make more 405's.

I have that same mould, I use them paper patched in my 45 cal Muzzleloader. I think they are great bullets. Do yours weigh 405 gr? My mould only throws 386 gr with soft lead. Ron

Mine weighed in at 389 gr. I use straight wheel weights. Do you have good success with them in your ML? If you do that may be something I may be interested in.

They shoot GREAT out of my ML. I have a Green Mountain .458 with a 1-18 twist and it is 32" long. This rifle shoots like a dream, and I have had good luck shooting targets at up to 300 yards. It is a peach! It is a TC Renegade with a Lyman 57 SML peep and a Lee Shaveers globe front sight with a level. Ron

My alloy gives bullets of 379 grains from this mold. I have used 29.0 gr of SR 4759 for 1695 fps into 3.2 inches at 50 yards with aperture sight; 53.5 gr of AA 2460 for 1820 fps, into 1.4 at 50 yards with 4X scope; and 47.0 gr of IMR 4198 for 1938 fps into 2.6 inches at 50 yards (aperture sight). Except for the load using 4759, all are heavy loads, five shot groups, fired from my Marlin 1895G.

I don't remember what my rationale was for choosing this particular mold. At first I thought it might have been because it was cheaper, being a single cavity, but then I remembered that hollow bases only come in single cavity. Somewhere on this site there is a post explaining that it is the original design used in the Trapdoor. Whatever my reason, I think that the hollow base gives a longer bullet for the weight, so it has a higher BC form factor maybe ?

Anyway, my guide gun and I like this bullet. BTW, I took the scope off and put on a Williams aperture sight. It seemed more in keeping with the guide gun concept. I took out the tiny aperture from the sight and threw it away. I just use the big outer ring as a poor man's ghost sight, and it works great.
