1894 rebarrel

My late grandfather passed me down an old marlin 44 mag. It was his deer gun for the latter part of his life but he neglected any maintenance the last couple years and the inside of the bore and chamber was trash. I did my best to salvage it but it was just to far gone to be able to achieve any kind of accuracy. I was able to get all of the action slicked back out.

I cannot bring myself to let this gun go for obvious sentimental reasons so I feel a rebarrel is the best option. What are some of the respectable barrel manufacturers that will make a round barrel for this rifle in a faster twist than the original, say a 1 in 26" or 28". I like the heavier boolits, 265gr and up.

They replaced a Rossi 1892 barrel for me. It is a round 357 magnum barrel. They made a turd into a diamond.

I would certainly get it repaired. It is a nice rifle and worth keeping even if it had not been your granddad's.

I think that if this rifle has a lot of sentiment re-lining might be the best choice to keep it original.

Years ago I bought a well-used Savage 99. I'm not sure it had ever been properly cleaned. I plugged the rear of the chamber with a size 00 rubber stopper, secured the rifle (barrel vertical) to the end of my workbench and filled it with Hoppe's #9 overnight. After about 2 weeks of that, the bore was clean, shiny, and accurate. I had my gunsmith clean the receiver and its contents.

I like Bager Barrels on rifles. They shoot very good and you can most twists in them. Got one on my Marlin .45-70 with a Parson's scope that would do under a 1/2" at a100 yards in my young days. 30" full hex barrel. Rifle was done by DeHeart out of Texas.

i'm with Norske, except i used a 1898 springfield armory(1903) in 30-40 krag. i did 5 or 6 days(over a month), 8-10 hours each, to strip my krag's barrel. the night(s) before (i did try the barrel vertical theory. the krag was filled with sweets about a day or two before i started to clean it.) it was my late great grandpap's and grandpap's gun and they only cleaned it with 3in1 oil. i used sweets, shooters choice and gunslicks foaming bore cleaner. there was black gunk, copper, more black gunk, cupronickel, more black gunk and even more black gunk. when i was done the krag barrel was shiny and smooth and the rifling was as good as day it was formed(.3085"). however, my shoulder and arm was screaming bloody murder!!!!!

i know that at some point it was bubba-ed up. the barrel was cut off to 22" and the front sight is "banded" on. but its mine, given to me by my grandpap and it will be one of my sons.

The grandson of the girl he lived with apparently used the gun at some point in the last few years and stored it outside in an open shed. The entire barrel, inside and out, was rusted and pitted horribly. It will need a new tube because the inside was rusted to bad to feed properly. I sanded it down both inside and out but it is paper thin and flimsy in places. The receiver and all steel parts in the action were bad too but that was thick enough to sand, polish and reblue where necessary. The gun was so weathered that the forgrip was split, or maybe that's why her grandson "hid" it in the shed, not sure.

Your are correct - sadly, Badger is long gone.
