View Full Version : Anyone want to start a postal match.

Perhaps we can have a postal match on cast boolits. Maybe even a monthly thing. (every month a different challenge) Hell, I'll even honcho the thing. Might even be able to get some simple prizes. For starters (if ok with admin) a special avatar celebrating your victory. (I'll design if necessary). Maybe a Cast boolits sticker or 2. Where is the enthusiasm?

Who would participate? If I get enough ok's in the next few days, I'll pursue it.

I wouldn't mind participating in at least some of them.

The problem here with a monthly event is that during the winter months many of the of the longer, developed ranges are snowed in. I can get out to a 50 yard informal range most of the year (may have to walk in some months) but longer range, bench shooting is pretty seasonal.

1-4 matches per year is probably a better plan given what people are able/willing to participate in and the amount of work involved in running each of them.

winter months we can do indoor pistol stuff. Obviously not everyone will be able to participate in every match, but I wont make it so obscure that only one person could do it. The first few times around, the prizes might just be bragging rights, but hopefully it'll get bigger and better.

I got something in mind for the Dec match, but will always be open to ideas.
Come one, come all. This is for fun guys.

Much too hard to shoot them 1" hunert yard groups with a gun than with a keyboard.

Lunicy, good idea. I used to run them here every winter, but time was hard to come by. Some events had good participation, others went lacking. I do think weather has a bit to do with people getting involved.

Here is a link to some of the matches I ran, and durations.

Thank you waksupi

I injured myself to were i can't work to full capacity and I work in construction to begin with, so I have free time.

Everyone can shoot these, it's a few rounds, it's practice, and it's all for fun.

Easy for you to say. We will be lucky to see zero degrees on our very warmest days for the next few months. Last postal I shot that Waksupi put on it was -30F. That presents something of a handicap. Wana spot me a half moa?

I'd be willing to give it a go so long as the range was 100M or less. If the Jeep will make it past the gate at our club range, it's not bad tramping to the 50M and 100M berms but, beyond that usually calls for snowshoes or mud boots...depending upon the temperature at the time.

Would like to see another run of last year's 10M airgun postal, too.

I need to get my ass out and shoot more. Job has been eating me up.

LOL! Every rifle I read about on the net is an MOA shooter. But apparently those guns never get to any of the ranges I frequent...

My preferred match would be 50 yard offhand 10 shot group with iron sights. But I'll try and shoot whatever lunicy sets up.

50 yards off hand is great. I'll use the 1917 enfield with cast.....OR the scoped Savage 308 I bought at Wally world with cast of course.

If it gets too deep (the snow :) ) I'll wear snow shoes.

I need to work up a decent cast load for my Ruger #1 in 300 Winchester cause that rifle is hands down the most balanced and off hand freindly rifle I've ever fired.

I can easily group inside 3" at 100 with 150gr remington corelocks and that rifle standing offhand.

A 3 inch group would have easily taken the gold in the 50 yard offhand match David R hosted. I can't remember the results from the waksupi matches, but I believe the winner was just over an inch for 10 shots at 100 yards benched.

Historically, there are 3 or 4 contests (100 yard benched scope, 50 yard offhand iron, etc.) and the shooting period goes for a couple or three months to get best turnout. Most guys don't like to post their mailing address and prefer to give that out via IM.

Separate classes for iron sights and "other"?

Offhand or rested?

12-18-2008, 10:22 AM
Centerfire only? Muzzleloaders? Rimfires?

My bull barrel 38 would be a good one to try... :)

A further thought. 50 feet? I'm not going to take a tape measure out to the range to figure that one out, nor am I going to handicap myself by shooting at 25 yards. I can measure off 16 1/2 paces which would be ABOUT 50 feet, how's that?

Hi lunicy,

How big in diameter is that bullseye? My printer prints it so the bullseye touches the edge of the paper.

lunicy
12-18-2008, 08:54 PM
The target is just the 7-8-9-10-x rings. The x ring is about 3/4" (that's by eye, didn't measure). These are targets I shoot regular. I figure keeping 5 shots in the 10 is difficult enough for us amateurs.

I've been shooting nothing but revolver for almost a year. But I'm signed up for the PSA Shootout in April and that is definitely an auto game. So I took the Kimber out on Saturday. With the performance I turned in, I'm rethinking. Six arrays of 30 falling plates should favor ten round magazines, but if I can't hit any of the damned things it could be a long afternoon.

OK then... As I said I took the day off. Beautiful day for it too. I popped out to the range and had the place all to myself. Wonderful! There's a lot to be said for being able to walk out and change targets just as often as you like. I took the Kimber Stainless Target II .45 ACP again. Boolit was the Lee 452-228-1R cast of quenched range scrap and Rooster Jacket lubed. This time the charges were 3.5 and 3.2 grains of Clays. I shot 4 targets of each load for score. Wonder of wonders, every one had ten shots on it. Most of them in the black even. Feeling much better about my upcoming steel match.:)

Here's the best of the bunch, shot with the 3.2 loads. I call it a 94, but I'll mail it in for the official scoring. The RN doesn't punch real nice holes in that notebook paper.

Missionary5155 and obssd1958
You were the only 2 that followed the rules properly. (2 targets 5 shots per)
David R, I only scored the first target you sent. I'm not sifting through tons of targets. "send your best 2"

The top three is:
Davidr and Azcoyhunter tied for first
Obssd1958 got second
Imashooter2 took third

Thanks all for shooting. It was an excuse to get out and shoot.

Might do this thing again in a bit. Thanks all.

Thanks for holding the match, I needed to get off my butt and shoot. Once I got started again, I couldn't stop.

lunicy,
Thanks for doing this. I had fun shooting the targets for a purpose more defined than just making holes!
I'm in for the next one, when you're ready!:Fire::Fire::Fire:

...and congratulations to David R and azcoyhunter on your match winning performances !

(Missionary5155 and imashooter2 - we'll do better next time!!!!!!!!!!)
