Electric dog collar

I have a very basic question I'm almost afraid to ask. Its sort of like asking a chainsaw question to a "chainsaw guy." You have a little 4 inch tree limb you want to trim in your suburban yard, but the chainsaw guy simply won't stand for you buying anything less than a Stihl that would take down a California redwood.

Oh well here goes...

Do electronic dog training collars that advertise as "Tone" just make an audible beep when you press a button on your controller? My needs are VERY specific. My 11 year old Brittany is going deaf for sure. But otherwise he's healthy and fairly spry, and still loves to hunt. As long as I hunt in low brushy fields we have no issues, as he can see me so he doesn't get lost. But, if we get into any kind of heavier cover, like over my head, my concern is he will wander and not be able to find me (us.) My thought is a collar that I can trigger a beep on so that I can locate him by sound may just keep us hunting longer.

At this point in his life, I am NOT going to train him to do anything. I like the way he hunts, he always stayed close, and was a great little hunting buddy. I'm not going to shock or stimulate him (although if the unit happens to have those features it's fine, I just won't use them.)

So does my question make sense? Can I use such a collar for the purposes I have in mind?

Get a radio tracking collar- direction and distance, or a GPS tracking collar.
GPS requires a subscription, but gives exact locations but will not work out of cell range

supposedly the dog can hear the tone and it used before a shock to alert the dog that it is stepping out of line, I doubt that you would be able to hear it as a locator when the dog is lost. the tracking collar is best for what you want to do.

Not aware of an option that emits a loud enough beep, or tone for you to hear. Before GPS tracking, folks in these parts used a bell on a bird dogs collar for tracking the dog when out of sight. Mighty coast effective as well!

Patrick L. your idea has merit. I used a beeper collar on one of my Brittany's for several years as she would go on point and I couldn't find her. She would stay on point until I found her or until the birds flew. The collar I used was quite loud and sounded every so many seconds. It probably didn't help her hearing but, at least I could find her. It took a few minutes but I just found it. If you would like it send me a PM and I'll send it to you as I won't be having any more dogs.

In my ignorance I didn't realize there was such a thing as a beeper collar, I was looking at the ones that actually will give the dog a shock. I subsequently did a little research on what you said, and that is exactly what I was looking for.

He is thoroughly soaked, since it had poured all day and night before, but miraculously the rain cleared out around 4 am (even though the forecast said probably not till 8 or 9). We were able to enjoy opening day and we got 3 pheasants, and he got a small piece of bacon afterwards, so all in all a pretty good day!

In heavy cover my Britany would go "On point" and silently point while I searched for him. After about 35 minutes he would bark in frustration and I would locate him - while listening to the ruffies flush as I approached.
A GPS locator would have been a treat.

Its my understanding that some of the newer beep collars go silent when the dog goes still on point. Sounds like a good plan, however my interest was simply keeping track of my buddy!

Collars with the option, beep WHEN the dog stops moving and goes on point. Mine also has a "locate" button, that produces a loud sound for you to hear. I have only used Sport Dog collars.

Many thanks for the picture, it brought tears to mine and my wife's eyes. It's good to know that someone else is able to use the collar. We have many years of memories of our Brittany's so very animated while hunting, the excitement they displayed when they caught bird scent and the hard lock-up on point. Wish we could still get out and hunt the way we used to. Enjoy your dog, they are with us such a short time. Good hunting and keep posting pictures.

I have a Sport Dog collar that beeps for training and has a vibration stimulus for training. The beep command may not be loud enough for you to hear if the wind is a bit noisy. The collars that beep when the dog is still for a certain ??TIME?? are somewhat louder. I am happy with the performance of the Sport Dog equipment.

My son got one and talked grandson into trying it on. You wouldn't believe how well that boy would mind. we laughed till we cried.

If you have decent cell service where you hunt, there are tracking devices that work with you cell phone. It a lot less expensive way to go instead of satellite tracking.

When we had a brittany when I was a kid, dad put a bell on his collar for hunting thick cover. When the bell went silent, we knew the dog was on point. Might be a lot cheaper than a training collar. We do have a training collar for our bluetick and the tone warning is not very loud. I probably couldn't hear it over 20 yards away.

The "Find my keys" works very well with good cell service. One of the first things we got for a grandson who can't seem to keep up with things. Works well for us. Key fob like thing and app.

Get the phone and put one of those "tracker apps" on it and tape it to his collar. If there is cell service, it will show where the other phone is.
