Picked up a marlin 1894 in 357, 1980's model.

Was told the tacks were on it when bought new from marlin.

I'm thinking someone added them? Anyone have any ideas about the tacks?
Factory deal or add on??

I remember the Winchester Crazy Horse at the time.

I believe that I’ve seen a picture of that gun before, don’t remember where. At the time I thought the tacks were not original.

Somebody added them.

Definitely an add on. Native Americans used to decorate their rifles with brass tacks. You can do a Google image search to see many examples.

You might consider, if you don't like it, changing the tacks from those large ones, to small ones. A guy posted here, who also is over at frontiermuzzleloading, a picture of a rifle he did with small tacks about 3/16" size. It was classy looking.

It looks like a Marlin 1894 and a Northwest Trade Gun mated and had a child.

Perhaps ........ it’s a tack driver.

Oh that poor rifle. I have that rifle in 357 from 1980 and I think it would lock itself in the safe if I came after it with tacks! :)

No that's not a Crazy Horse, that's someones DIY job, probably while killing a 5th of cactus juice????

I'm sorry, but how on God's green Earth can somebody take a nice rifle and garbage it up like that ?

Thankfully they stopped before putting on the big rims and tires.

If the OP wants to sell it I’m pretty sure that I have a very nicely figured NOS stock for it. Maybe we could raffle the old one off for the right to burn it, proceeds to the forum of course.

I suspect that a CAS was involved. I’m surprised that it bears no leather braiding. I would happily take it home and patch all those little bitty holes.

Well we know for sure Remington didn’t do it! There was s no way they could have gotten that many parts to line up and be straight!

Well, I don't hate it. Don't love it but, don't hate it. I'd remove the tacks, and detach it with smaller ones, maybe add some in where needed. I'm Indian though.

I like it. It is what it is, but like the poster above I would replace some of those tacks with smaller ones.
