View Full Version : Lead?

Hey Everyone,

Lead has been a little scarce and failing to find what I needed from vendors here I expanded my search. I happened to find scrap from a bullet manufacturer. It is a Pb, Sb, Tn alloy and casts nicely.

I would like to ask members here if they would have interest in this lead. I can get it for a bit under $1.80 a pound but will have to buy 2000 pounds. I would be happy with 500 pounds so I would need to find a home for part of it.

If anyone is interested, I can recast this into FRB size friendly and get 68-72 pounds in a box. Cost will be approximately $140 a box including shipping.

Can we find a home for 20 or so boxes?

Let me know?

Thanks.

S.

Also, this is "new" lead. it is fall off from the bullet manufacturing process and is on par with what I have seen from Zip Metals.

Do you know the percentages of the alloy. Might help others want to commit if they know what the blend is so they can sweeten to their own recipe as desired.

Thanks for the tip.

They told me and I have forgotten. I will find out tomorrow and post it.

It's most likely pure lead!

The cores for jacketed bullets usually have some antimony in the alloy. Older threads on this forum suggest 1% - 3%.

No such element as Tn.....if you mean tin it is Sn.

Tn is unobtainium!

Funny thing....I've never heard of "scrap from a bullet manufacture"

If it really is from a casting house...even floor drippings could be remelted.

In any event...I think you need to get us the Pb/Sb/Sn ratios for us to make a commitment worth while.

You are absolutely correct. What was I thinking? Trying to put a "T" in tin....

You learn something new every day.

Most of this is the "hairs" that come out during the swaging. I saw it first hand.

They manufacture from lead alloy wire unlike some who cast their cores. I suspect that they are not equipped to make the wire from scrap. They buy it on big spools.

Antimony 5.35%

Tin 2%

Perhaps this will clarify:

I am not sure what else to say about the lead. The bullet manufacturer puts a length of alloy wire in the swage die and press it. The excess lead comes out of two little holes in the die looking like a pile of lead hairs. That cannot be reused unless it is smelted and extruded into wire again. They normally ship it back to the lead supplier for credit against purchases. If I am willing to pay more than the lead supplier then they will sell it to me.

Yeah, I’ve been watching this thread with interest and would be interested in a box depending on when the expense comes due. Maybe we need to treat this like a group buy and create a list of interested.

I propose we start a list and if your interested quote the newest copy of the list and add your name to it. PNW_Steve, hopefully I’m not overstepping offering this idea. PM me and I’ll delete if you don’t like this idea.

Lyman #2 alloy is 90-5-5 @ $21/5# plus shipping. You've got a good deal going there!

FYI my calculation shows: 70#=70#*7000gr/# = 490K grains / 405gr = 1,210 boolits; $140/1,210 = $.115 ea. or for small er pills just ratio (your weight/405) x $.115, etc. Sounds like a good deal, eh.

You want to grab the most recent posting with the list and select “quote” instead of reply. This will bring that posting into your response, than just add your name and post the updated list.

OK, I'm working on it...

well, I can't seem to get it to work. But I'm in for a box when the buy goes live.

Hate to do this but I’m out on this one. Found a closer source so I’m out. Mvintx I did add you to the list in my spot though.

If you want to copy the list to add your name you do have to copy the text, the quote feature only works on first level and won’t let others quote you to add your name like I originally though, my bad.

Please note: we haven’t heard from original poster since October so not sure this is still potentially happening.

Thanks Stubach. Yeah, this buy might not be going anywhere but I'll hang in there. I'm surprised there has not been more interest.

Amazing how people can start buy lists, get buyers, and it is not even the guy trying to sell it!

He seems to have bailed on us and this group.
