My Brother and I are going in on a buy on powder. We have been using Unique but I have seen a couple others I can get a lower price on and also not have to pay HazMat on as I can pick them up when I go past PVI. Also everyone seems to out of Unique. Has any one used Rex #2 or AA #5 in any of the usual loads where one go to Unique as a first choice. We load mostly all the pistol WCFs, 45 Colt and ACP. In rifles for plinking loads in the Hornet to 45-70. In a rifle powder Has anyone tried AA 2495 in place of IMR or H 4895? I can get the AA powder about $10.00 a jug cheaper than the IMR or H powders in the 8lb jugs.

I use a good bit of the Rex powder due to the savings. Both Rex II and Rex III are useful in handgun rounds but Rex II is too fast to use as a unique substitute. Rex III is much closer although still not an exact swap. Rex II is closer to Red Dot than Unique. I have used 7gr of Rex III as a cast boolit load for kids in the 30-30 and it behaves very similarly to unique in that role. See Rex Data Here:

AA is ball powder so not as good a choice for reduced loads as IMR 4895 (H4895 suffers from the same).

So far with the Russian powder it has performed well , very similar to Unique when loaded to the instructions that come with it , I got mine from HI-tech ammo , also got some of their AA#7 and it performs as stated also .

I have a jug of AA 2495, it isn't ball powder , it is extruded powder.

I have used 2495, it is an extruded powder. I found it to be as near as identical to IMR4895 as you can get. I used it in both 45-70 with cast and the RP 405 j-bullet and in 223 with 65 grain Sierra boat tails. It was a good accurate powder. This was a couple years ago.

You're both right - I just checked and the one I was thinking of is 2520 not 2495. My mistake.

Yup, I've used 2520 as well. Only in heavy (77grain and 65 grain) 223 loads. It appears to be a tad faster than H380 (which is my favorite for 22-250) and I have thought of trying it in that, but H380 has been so good for me and my loads for my 22-250's are something I just have not messed with I hate to switch. The 2520 in the limited amount I have used it has worked well in my AR15, no experience with it in anything else though.

I use 2520 in my 1891 Arg. Mauser 7.65x53. 180 gr. Rem. .310" RN, CCI200 primer, 45 grains.
Very accurate and 2,640fps. Two elk, both one shot kills.

AA 2520 is one of best powders in 30-30. Used 28.5 grains behind the 311407 group buy.

Amen to that brother. Russianique has become my favorite toy. The AA#7(eight pounds for less than $90.00 delivered) has proven to be excellent as well. I plan to order 20lbs of the Russianique at the end of the year. I figure it will be less than $215.00 delivered.
