pump accuracy

What do you expect and what have you achieved, accuracy wise, with your favorite pump? I am primarily referring to "vintage" guns but if you have one of the reproductions or such, I'd like to here from you also.

With my model 270 Winchester, 1 inch groups at 25 yards is the norm, using promotional 22 lr ammo.

Many years ago, I had a Remington 572. I never shot for groups. It would kill squirrels consistently to 50 yards(head shots).

I have a Remington 121 that I have never shot groups, but it is deadly accurate.

The only one of four or five pump .22's that I have owned that I ever shot groups on paper with was one of the 16" Rossi's about thirty years ago. I didn't have a solid rest but its accuracy was disappointing to say the least.

At the same time I had a Second Model Colt Woodsman and one of the 7.5" Colt New Frontier .22 single actions. They both shot tighter groups.

None of my 22 pumps have scopes so the only data I have is with factory issue opens. My first 121 would hold 1/2 inch at 25 yards with 5 shot groups. Never shot the other for groups, just to zero. Shot one of the games at rim fire central with my first one.Not milk carton ammo but PMC moderators were not top end target ammo. They both deliver Solid head shots on squirrels as far as I can see to place the shot, call it 30 yards or so. Never tried target ammo or much group shooting with them. The Remington M121 is a winner.

My 572 shoots patterns, large patterns. I need to get it out and start trying to figure out why.

I have a Winchester model 62A that shot patterns when I first got it. The original owner fed it a steady diet of shot loads and never cleaned it. The bore looked like a smooth bore. After hours of soaking and scrubbing, the bore finally came clean. It's turned out to be a real decent shooter after all.

The only 22 pump I had with scope was 572 Rem. I had it sighted in with shorts for squirrels. It shot less than 1” at 40yds. I have a 61 & 62 Win that are very accurate but only have irons. I’m in same boat with CF pumps. I like Rem 14 & 141 in 35cal. I’ve never had one scoped but I have used the tang sights on them. I’m sure they would hold 1.5” at 100 with scope.

I have an old Stevens Premier trailblazer from the '30s. I was hitting my orange-sized swinger at around 75 yards from a lawn chair this summer. Its a really fun and surprising gun.

I have a Garcia Rossi 22 pump, long barrel. This was the first edition before Garcia sold Rossi. Got it in '75. Thousands of rounds shot. Seldom missed. Accurate and fun. Never shot for groups. Favored above my mountie (mountie front sights stink).
In my old age, I seldom shoot 22s.

Interesting thread. Of the scores of guns I have owned, I have never had a pump action rifle. "Back in the days" they were reported to be none too accurate so they had little appeal to me. In practical terms, a 2" group at 50 yards is going to down a lot of game but I was drinking the Kool-Aid. And I was never a fan of tube fed guns unless they had a loading gate.

Good to see some of you experienced reasonable success with them. If I find a cheap beater I might pick one up after things cool down. Prices seem to be a bit nuts on everything right now. I can get a new CZ for less than most used pumps listed on Gunbroker.

my dad has, i think, rem m527(150? years anniversary) in 22 that would take headshots on squirrels at about 50 yards. he also has a rem m760 in '06 that goes about 1 1/4" at 100 yards(5 shots) with 180gr rem rn. my late grandpap had a m760(1952 or 3) that goes 1 1/2" at 100 yards with the same thing(given to my oldest son). i had a rem m760 in 308 and that was a sub minute group. a 150gr hornady rn with imr 4064 that goes 1/2 - 3/4" group at 100 yards(5 shots). she was the unluckiest gun ever!!!!! i have a rem m14 in 30 rem that i have to shoot. my late uncle had a rem m7600 in '06 and that was a piece of junk, 3"+ at 100 yards(3 or 5 shots). my friend had a old win m62 that looked like it was thrown into a blender(old tractor gun) but boy could it shoot. he'd take the heads off dove and put the bullet into a groundhog's brain thru the eye at about 50 yards. he did all of this with open sights. he still has it, tho he has glasses now(which i should have).

I have a 1971 Rem 572 that will cloverleaf at 25 yards...then take the tacks out of the corners of the target. A buddy of mine told me (one of those "betcha can't hit...." deals) that I couldn't hit a chipmunk that he spotted 75 yards away.....my 572 proved him wrong.

Mine isn't the deluxe model....but it is topped with a 3-9x scope....it does quite well....and....it loves the cheap Federal ammo which is a bonus.

When I reline a pump it has to put 5 shots under an inch at 25 yards or it gets work. The last Henry I shot would do this also.

Only accuracy comment I have for a Winchester 1890 in .22WRF is that it hit the eye of a Sparrow at about 35 yards Standing off hand without a sling or rest and with the original Iron sights.
I was around 13YO at the time.

the only pump I had was a Rem 572, it shot fairly well. At the time I was playing with all sorts of rimfire ammo and measuring/weighing etc, the best groups I got with the pump was some cheap highland ammo (made in the Philippines, not sure what it is branded in the USA, might be Armscor now?) that had been sorted for weight and rim thickness, of a bipod and rear bag it would hold just under 1" at 50m, it never really liked high end ammo (I tried some Lapua and SK and a bit of Eley) would run about 1.5"
for general plinking and out right fun a pump gun is hard to beat, still kicking myself for selling it..

Here’s a group I shot with my new limited run 7600 chambered in 35 whelen load testing this spring. I have to zero it yet as I was aiming for the diamond to the right.

My 1984’ 30-06 7600 will shoot almost as tight at 100 yards with 180 grain core loct hand loads. I’ve shot many .3” to . 4” groups with it with a couple of doffing bullet and powders. I bought a 35 Rem 7600 carbine for my pops 15 years ago and load tested it the first year I bought it for him. Best group was .8” with around 2 grains over max book load and a 180 grain hot core. I don’t own any rimfire pumps to comment on and wasn’t going to till I saw the 270 win comment in post #2.

I would set them out at the rifle range we had next to the Detachment and at 100 yards from a wood table rest I would have no trouble hitting them all of the time. 572 was scoped.
