Hi Guys
Much to my wife's amusement  I have lashed out and bought a second hand Pedersoli rolling block in 45/70 to go with my M17 and Ruger #3. Saves on reloading dies, I just have to cast more boolits!
I am using this pretty much for paper and cowboy silhouette with 405 cast boolits - when I get organised.
It's in pretty good nick and has probably only had 100 rounds through it in it's life, I know the original owner.
Cost a grand and came with the receiver sight so it wasn't to bad a deal.
Should get it to the range next week end for a play! :Fire:

Looks like a nice rifle and if its like the one I used to have it will shoot very well with black or white powder.

Wicky,
You are going to love that roller. I too have a thing about 45/70's and have had two Rolling blocks, both of which shot beautifully. I have a couple of Sharps now as well as the Ruger but have dispensed with the Marlin - though I still pine for it now and then.
I found the CBE 462500 worked best in my rolling blocks as they had somewhat oversize bores. For some reason the Saeco 380 gn pointed GC slug worked well too but won't shoot so well in my present guns. Shame because it is a terrific dual cavity mould. The CBE 458430 FN is my favourite game bullet now. Kills with authority.
I use mainly black powder down here in Victoria but it is a shade cooler here than the Alice. I expect you would have hard fouling issues in your dry climate. I use Wano PP with home made lanolin lube when it is hot and it does help some.
Anyway it is lovely to see another 45 cal freak in Oz. Yell out if you would like some slugs try.
BTW, I am looking at selling my Ped Sharps silhouette 45/90 to make way for a Shilo if anyone up your way is interested.

I, too, am a fan of the 45-70 cartridge.

The Pedersoli Rolling blocks I have had were the older ones purchased in the 70s. The ones that had brass hardware instead of iron. The one with the 26" 1/2 octagon barrel was a nice carrying rifle, the short one (18 1/8") was purchased with the intention of rebarreling with a 32" barrel. (Never got around to it and now have a 50 caliber barrel for it.)

The long barrel was used with black powder and the 405 hollow base boolit from the NEI mold. It shot well as did black powder and the Lyman 457122 boolit. Both were strictly hunting loads so if you are looking for target grade stuff you are on your own.

What is an M17?

..............Wicky, I think you'll really like that rifle. Looks like the Creemore version, right? I had on in 45-70 and it was a shootin' essobee. A place had the Pedersoli Super Match RB's on sale and one of them was in 40-65. Since I was 45-70 poor I decided to sell one to finance the "New Caliber". As it happened a friend wanted my Pedersoli 45-70 Creedmore and was willing to go the sale price on the new one. Theyre' sure nice rifles and Pedersoli puts nice barrels on'em.

I have the same rifle in 40-65. Very versatile, the bore is .410" so I use the 265 grain LFN and the 400 grain Lyman Snover.
I'm sure you will have fun with shooting that rifle. Keep posting with your results if you can.

I have one of those in .40-65, a very nice, accurate rifle, I know you will like it.
Mine has an excellent bore, I do believe that Pedersoli makes a better barrel than Uberti in my experience.

i have a RB bought back in 1975 for $185.00 which was a good sum in those day's will take some pics tomorrow and post them. i'm loading the Lee 459-500-3R with 11.0 grns. of unique federal LR mag primer for a nice plinking load. i can consistantly hit a 18"x24" metal buffalo at 500 yds. with this load will chrono it the next range outing.

I traded an old tractor that didn't want to run for a Pedersoli rolling block similar to the one you have pictured. Unfortunately I cannot say much about it as we have had plenty of snow and cold since the trade whcih kind of spoils shooting interest. It don't matter how many BP cartridge guns one has, one should be a 45-70.

NorthMn,
It's gonna warm up starting today!! I've got a Pedersoli RB in 40-65, Badger barrel, MVA sights that used to win championships for the previous owner out west a couple of states, with plenty of test loads to run through it. Also just bought back a CSA Highwall in 45-70 from the guy I sold it to. Plenty of loads for that one too!
Let's go warm weather!!!

here is a full view of my 1975 circa RB. excuse the mess on the ground as we just had a pretty good rain storm yesterday. one thing to mention about the earlier Pedersoli RB. i had problems with the breach block FP hole area failing to where primers in the case would back out quite a ways.
one of the on-line RB parts vendors told me that the earlier Pedersoli's were made with steel which had lead in it and some had reported reciever failures due to this problems. maybe some one here can give more info on this as i have not heard of any reciever failures with the Pedersoli RB.
i bought a new breach block from VTI which cost me $105.00 which i had to fit but now the lock up is real tight with no play in the hammer. one more thing, broke the firing pin while dry- firing it so i made a new one on my lathe. oh yeah, that's a 30" barrel on it.

You need to explain one thing about such a purpose . . .

One can never have too many 45-70s,

44 Mags,

or 45 Long Colts.

The .45-70 is one of my favorites, although I own six singleshots in this caliber, none of my Rollers is in .45-70. What twist rate is the barrel on the Pedersoli? Hopefuly they use something around 1-18" to 1-20" so it will stabilize the heavier bullets.
My Ballard and Hepburn both use 1-18", and stabilize bullets in the 500-550 range with no trouble, yet still shoot lighter 360 gr. well also.
