I have the RCBS 44-245-SWC mould, and I'm wanting to use Lyman 429421 data because it's more available. Problem is, I don't have a 429421 mould or a sample bullet. Nor can I find a picture of the two side by side to see the placement of the crimp grooves so I can determine case volume.

Could someone help me out there? Maybe with a picture, or a 429421 measurement from base to the top of the crimp groove.

Thanks.

How hot are you planning on loading?

I realize there are variations between boolit designs that certainly lead to pressure variations but that’s a handloaders cross to bear.

I approach each new load, rifle and hand gun alike with caution anyway and my guns are all considered individuals.

I do take bullet data as close to what I have and apply it as a yard stick, not gospel mind you, and proceed from a start charge and begin a work up.

It is rare that I end up in a maximum load very soon because outside air temperature is a concern but most often max is not where I was headed anyway.

Stop over thinking it.
Use data for that weight and start low easy as that. Everyone always makes everything way more complicated than it needs to be

Bazoo,

Your first two sentences confuse me. If you already have the RCBS version, how is the Lyman version “more available”? You also need to be aware that Ideal, then Lyman, moulds varied widely over time as old cherries wore out and new ones were cut. Regardless of manufacturer, Keith designed his bullet with square sides and a flat bottom to the grease groove and complained loudly as adaptations of his designs changed (“ruined”) them.:x

My only experience with the RCBS 44 mould was with a brand new double cavity mould that I was too impatient to prepare and season properly, so I went back to an ancient Ideal 429421 SC mould I found and never looked back. I really never gave the RCBS a fair chance, but that was my experience.

Thanks for the replies.

Thanks Joe.

I know I can use the data interchangeably with starting loads, I'm wanting to run some W296 loads though. Knowing how close the bullets are in used case volume would be helpful to me. Or at least comfort me, since RCBS doesnt list w296 or h110 data.

Froggie sir, I meant that data for the Lyman is more available. I have data for it using more powders. You aught to try RCBS moulds, they cast well. The one I have drops .432 with wheel weight / scrap alloy. I didn't break in or season it, I just colored it with graphite and started using it. It was a bit ornery at first but that didn't last long. I had a mould that was dropping small and returned it to RCBS and they sent me this new one.

I once bought a new 30-180-FN and it dropped good bullets inside a dozen casts with nothing but a spritz of lighter fluid to clean it.

I know there was several variations to the 429421, did that affect case volume? The only ones I'm aware of are the height of the front driving band and the lube groove.

The link shows the 429421 measurement from base to top of crimp groove groove as .360. My 44-245-SWC is .300, a pretty significant difference.

Thanks for the help.
