Uberti 73 Winchester

This might be long winded so you've been warned. I've always loved old Winchesters, I've owned several 73 models and a couple of 92s over the years but always ended up selling them as for me its just not something I want to take out and shoot a lot, cause they were originals and I'd hated for anything to happen to them. I've been admiring from afar the Ubertis and they are pretty with the case colored receivers and pretty wood and the fact that they come in easy to find calibers, I've got a couple of 45LC revolvers that I reload for, a Cimarron colt clone and a Vaquero, and recently picked up a .357 Cimarron colt clone, really like shooting the 38s in it, just fun to plink with. Then my brother was showing me a couple of his safe queen Uberti 73s he'd picked up at decent prices and made me want one even more. So I've been looking online and scouring the gunshows but prices are pretty high on everything right now. Told my brother to keep and eye out for me and I'd pretty much decided I wanted one in 357. so could plink and target shoot 38s. Went to a gunshow this weekend and as we got out of the truck in the parking lot I see this guy holding a lever so I wait for him to walk our way and asked him what he had. He was holding a Uberti 73 in .357 that he'd bought two years ago and never fired it, still had the box and the yellow ziptie around the stock and lever, I mean who buys a lever action and doesn't at least rack the action a few times!!! He'd decided he was going to sell it since he never had even shot it in two years so I spent my wad right there in the parking lot before I even got into the show, he had it priced right and I had the money so it was mint to be!!! It can't say its never been shot not, went out to the farm Saturday afternoon after we got back and me and the son in law put a few rounds down range, sure is a sweet shooting rifle and the sites were on target to. 268452268453268454

They are pretty nice rifles and mine has proven accurate with both smokeless and black powder. I opted for the 44-40 because I'm such a hide bound traditionalist and, I had one 30 years ago and sold it to a guy who wanted it a LOT worse than I did. He said price it. I did....so high I figured I was beyond his willingness to pay, (didn't really want to sell it), but, they were fairly new on the market and a bit difficult to come by. He gave me what they're selling for today. Nuts....

Now, in true old west tradition, I want a Colt SAA clone in 44-40. I'll spring for one someday.

I've got one of the Uberti 1873 carbines in .44-40. Really a pretty gun, and shoots very well. I bought a Winchester 1873 (Japanese made) at the same time. It's also a good gun, but if I had to choose I'd keep the Uberti. They were expensive a year ago, so I hate to think what they might be getting for them now!

You can look on GunBroker and see what the buy nows are going for, I did find a guy that caters to the cowboy shooters on there, that's fairly local to me whos prices weren't terrible but they start around 1250 to 1500, then there is shipping and FFL transfer fee. It isn't a rifle that any of our local gun stores carry.

I have a Uberti 73 in 45LC love the rifle very accurate and by far the best looking rifle I own .

I have the same model in .45 colt. I put a Marbles peep sight on it. With my deer load, it shoots 5 shot groups under 1 inch at 50 yards. How can you NOT love a rifle that is that pretty and that accurate?

I bought one just before Christmas from a place in Texas 45 colt , 750 or so bought a couple Uberti 73 single action in 45 colt and 1 in 357 same place was 305-315 for each pistol all used which as for being used looked they looked like once fired never carried , love them and that Uberti73 and a Uberti SAA are my woods guns when camping perfect pair .

I bought mine at a local auction and I think it's the sporting rifle. It has the pistol grip, fairly decent checkering. It had belonged to a late friend and I wanted something of Bill's. It was between the '73 and an Uberti '76 in 50....well horse manure, I forgot the powder charge!!! Anyway, I was the only bid at $800. Got it home and discovered the lifter/carrier was stuck which is why no one else bid, I assume. Took maybe 5 minutes to free up and it's fine. BP or smokeless it shoots slightly above or below 1 inch at 50 yards, benched and bagged, open sights.

I compete in cas and have 3 of them. My first was a 30 inch octagon bbl Cimarron that unfortunately had a bad bbl, stayed at Cimarron for a year while a new bbl was made and shipped over. It’s fine now. My second was a Stoeger carbine that I’ve used for my ‘73/‘76 centennial carbine build that I've recently completed. It runs great and is almost as fast as my Marlin 1894. My third is a 1866 brass framed musket that I bought last year. I had a 9 month wait for that one as they only make them as a special order. I believe its .44-40 but the others are .45. They are very pretty rifles but to make them run you need to replace the way too stiff springs and too soft screws. If you aren’t competing in cas and only shoot it occasionally it will be fine but to make it run smoother a good cas gunsmith can improve it a bunch.
Savvy Jack, tell me about the looong scope on your rifle. Pretty neat. Something like that would be da bomb on my long bbled rifle.

The scope is nice for shooting 100 yard targets but that is about it. The mounting system is a bit to be desired but once I got it stable and tight, it worked out fine. Certainly not a "plug-n-play" option. I would love to have an original set-up. Works well with my tired eyes. My eyesight is still good but I just went through the transition between good and needed reading glasses, Bad for both open and iron sights. Now that they are worse and I have prescription glasses, I can see a bit better with open sights again with the use of glasses....but I left the scope on the 73' while removing the scope from the Marlin 1894CB.

Pretty neat but...hadn’t thought about it having to be offset to allow the mtys to get ejected. I’ll have to put the much simpler tang sight and globe front back on my rifle. With my old eyes I’ve reversed the rear sight on my main match rifle, an 1894 .45 marlin cowboy ltd. Moves the rear sight notch farther from my eye which makes the notch a little smaller and clearer. Thanks for the info. Ed
