Looking for a recommendation for a pistolsmith to change calibers on my SAA. I had it rebuilt decades ago as it belonged to my great-grandfather and was in poor shape.

Would like to change it to 38-40 and was wondering who you would recommend.

Thanks

Just out of curiosity, what caliber is it now? Also, do you want original mfg parts or would you take repros? There are a lot of good quality repro parts out there, and you might even get a stronger finished gun using modern parts.

If price is no object and you want it heirloom perfect, Doug Turnbull sets the industry standard; if OTOH, you want a shooter, I would suggest you go to the SASS or other forums that attract SA enthusiasts and ask the same question you asked here. Those audiences will be full of guys with just the experience you need. Since 38-40 isn’t used in competition as often as the 44s and 45s (and even 38 Spl) you might get real lucky and find somebody with take-off original parts in their bins. Unless you are looking for that museum grade restoration, finding the gunsmith who has those parts may be your best strategy... most SA specialists can change and fit a barrel and cylinder well.

Good luck with your project and be sure to post pictures here of your before and after results.

I just got my Colt’s SAA back from being re-calibrated from .44-40 to .45 Colt. First time out yesterday and I got 38 out of 50 in about 20” from 100 yards, standing unsupported one handed. My cast 454190 ww .454” Alox over 8.0 gr. of Unique. Never had I ever had just high hit ratio first time out with a gun.

My ‘smith says he retired, but if you wish I’ll ask him if he will do your. One warning about my ‘smith, hurry don’t enter into his thinking.
