Alright. So I just got my new Henry x 45-70 (it's a go to bear gun. Don't gripe the plastic). I'm presently running Ranch Dog molds (from my old Marlin GBL). I'm looking at getting into powder coating so I have some questions...

Is it alright to use a gascheck boolit without a gascheck? Oh. I'm planning on keeping things on the slow side. I'm a fan of Unique powder for my loads.

I'm thinking of a new mold, probably 405gr. Can anyone recommend for the Henry 45-70's (I haven't slugged but researching people seem to think 0.459"?)? With powdercoating in mind IF that makes any difference? And I'm in Canada which adds to the PITA factor (trying to get some Ranger Point Precision parts. My, are the American fees for permits and shipping adding up - my order is getting larger and larger to make the fee's "worthwhile").

Thanks all

For your purposes, I would suggest the Lee 405 grain plainbase bullet. It's inexpensive, and accurate.

Edit: OOPS, I mixed up the 5 and 0. While the 450 grain could work, the 405 grain has a crimp groove that should be in the right place for a lever rifle.

I bought the X Lever in 45-70 ... so much fun. I started with the 340gr Lee mold. I tested 11gr of Bullseye and Unique, 22 gr of 2400 and 15gr of a Trailboss. Running the irons so far and favorite load has been the Bullseye. Lumbers down range at 1100 FPS. So soft. The 2400 (with buffer) had a really nice thump to it. Here’s one of the bullets coated. I also tried PC and lube combo. Trying to source some IMR4198 to test

Is this the one you mean?

It says 457 diameter. Is that suitable? I've only ever used the 459's before.

Is the bullseye like the unique or does it require a wad?

I edited my original post due to the mistake. Yes, the bullet you linked in post #4 is correct. It will likely drop larger than .457", should be close to .459". If you powder coat, that should add nearly .002" too.

Bullseye is just like Unique, neither require filler.

ironbrew: I have the case hardened octagon barrel Henry 45-70. It's a real shooter. I also have a half dozen moulds Lee and Noe. The Lee 405 hollow base is an all around good bullet in the various 45-70s. My personal favorite is the Noe 460-405-RF RG2 with large and small hollow point pins + the flat point. I powder coat these and load them over RX7, H335 or Shooters World Buffalo Rifle (5744) The large hollow point ones Destroy Bowling Pins. Gp

No buffer needed with Bullseye or Unique. I did use a .75gr Dacron buffer with the 2400 load.

I'll admit, a tapered octagon bbl in sidegate carbine with a good ghost ring and case colour hardened would have been my ideal. And (this is a big one) with the ability to order with a shorter LOP. Us short people in cold climates just don't do with 14"LOP. Between aforementioned short and heavy clothing, we need to be able to get shorter... LOL. That's my next mission with this rifle (It's my replacement for my Marlin GBL for grizzly country so fitting well is critical for speed). That, and trying to get a rail or a rangerpoint precision rail/cloverleaf. My preference is for the RPP but importing isn't cheap.

I can't seem to find that mold on the Noe website. What does RG stand for?

I believe that is in reference to a NOE's Hollow Point bullet mold .
