My son recently bought a Browning 1885 from an individual. Is it safe to carry this rifle with a bullet in the chamber? There doesn't seem to be any form of safety or hammer notch.

There is a safety notch on the hammer. I believe the firing pin is inertial, therefore I would trust the safety notch.

Its quite safe empty. Thats the way I teach my boys to carry. No safer way than that.

There is an automatic inertial safety that will not let the hammer touch the firing pin, unless it falls from the full-cock position.
I have both an older and new one, and they both work the same.
I am very carefull about gun safety and would not hesitate to carry the Browning 1885 with one in the chamber.

Now that is one of the best posts I have read for a long time. Chamber empty, and action open. No safer than that. That is one reason why I think a single shot is the only rifle for a youngin. Tom.
