The only boolits I have cast so far are 9mm, and I have been using range scrap of unknown hardness. I now have a mold for a 300 Blackout AR I put together recently. I plan on loading subsonic rounds. I think I may need a harder alloy, maybe range scrap will be ok. I have a 5 lb ingot of superhard I could alloy in. Should I try it with just range scrap? If I need harder, how much superhard should I add as a starting point?

IMHO your range scrap should be fine with subsonic 300 blackout if it works OK for 9mm. If you powder coat even better.

Key word is SUBSONIC :) --- like DAF said, your good -- no GC needed

"range scrap of unknown hardness"

I'm not sure what kind of answers you expect, without knowing what your range scrap is?
But here goes, I like to use 94-3-3 for 9mm, as well as, for most "standard level cast boolit loads" in Rifle.
Good Luck.

Like the guys said...................SUBSONIC is the key word here. You should be OK with a 9mm alloy and no GC. if you go sonic+ you should use a different harder alloy like for standard rifle boolits. I use 16-18 +PC in my sonic+ long guns.

I would totally recommend PC'ing them!

I will be powder coating. I did a pencil hardness test with a set of artists pencils a while ago but I don’t remember the #. It matched up with typical range scrap #s posted on the internet. I need to start taking notes.

Subsonic you could use dead soft lead without PC and probably be fine. You are talking less then muzzleloader velocities.
