View Full Version : minimum velocity for 215gc boolits with a .250 metplat to use for deer hunting
Is 1675 fps enough to work well with a .250 metplat?

What caliber?
35 caliber from 14 inch 1 in 10 twist msr barrel.
Can drill hollow point with forster tool if needed.
1850 fps works real well without HP from marlin 35rem.

been a lot of deer killed with 38 spl. at 1000 fps or less. just place the shot and be within the right range.

If alloy hardness does not exceed about BHN 12-13 and range is short enough that striking velocity is above 1400 fps where the deer is, it should work fine.

1,128 FPS is the minimum, anything lower bounces off.
On a serious note, if you cast that of a lead/tin alloy like 20-1 or 16-1, and drill a hollowpoint, you would have a really nasty round there.
I found a little better load that goes 1716 fps average with an ES of 8 fps using 23.2 grains H-4198 and cci 450 primers.
75 yard 5 shot groups shoot 1 inch.
I'm happy with that and it burns clean suppressed.

I use the 35-200-FN HP'd with the Forster in my 35 Rem. It kills deer just fine but i push it a bit faster than you do.

My mountain mold boollit is almost identical except from the end of the bore-rider to the metplat is truncated cone.
My powder coated boolits aren't very hard but the ones I lube are harder and look a lot like yours lubed with carnuba red that I use in my Marlin.
I usually hunt with 45 caliber but they won't work with my mystic can.
I might send it in for an upgrade to the cosmic to use in 450bm but it is very quiet and the 350L hammered the 4 deer last year using hornady ftx's.
I didn't have time to work up a boolits load since I got it during the middle of bow season.
I'm thinking with a .25 inch deep HP the 215gc should expand and none of my shots will be past 200 yards.
I'm tempted to buy Noe's version of your boolit in HP.
