Has anyone used IMR 4227 in place of Accurate 5744, they are next to each other on some burn charts....

If I'm using that range of powder I will try both 5744 and 4227. I've been using H4227 for many, many years but now will have to use the IMR flavor since Hodgdon dropped their version. They are very close and I've found that 4227 performes better with the lower end velocities than 5744 with light to medium weight bullets. Many times 5744 will not burn efficiently until a certain pressure is reached and that can be way over the velocity wanted for a specific cast bullet.

Seems to be my conclusion also. With a heavier boolit 5744 works well and I like this powder. IMR 4198, a slower powder than 5744 has the same problem with light boolits. On the recommendation of some fellow cast boolit shooters,I will try 4227 this spring in the '03 with some lighter boolits
