View Full Version : MP Mold improvements

I know it's hard to improve something close to perfection, but I finally changed something on one of my MP molds that had been bothering me a little. I always seemed to have a little gap under the sprue plate, unless I ran the sprue plate really loose, which I don't like. I like that it swings easily, but not freely on its own weight, I like a little bit of resistance. I was a little reluctant to start working on this mold, it's my favorite mold for the 45-70 and 450 Marlin by far. I pulled out the roll pin, tapped the hole and installed a button head cap screw. I also had to drill and tap the mold for a set screw on the side. This is what NOE, Accurate and Arsenal use on all of their molds. Even MP does this on his aluminum molds, I wish he did this on all his molds. The problems seems to be bigger on the two cavity molds with short sprue plates.
I'm really glad I made this modification, it works beautifully, no more raised sprue cuts, and weight variation is less too.

Nice job! I've been debating the same modification to mine.

I agree, darn hard to improve MiHec moulds.
That said, I too put a screw on some of my moulds to hold the sprue plate down, depends on the mould - some 2 cav need it, some 4 cav need it - not all.
Every mould has it's quirks.
I also put in a set screw for the hold down ( while I'm at it I replace the tiny set screw on the pivot) I ended up with a bag of 10/32 set screws from somewhere. Nice big screw, nice big allen wrench to turn it !
Another thing I do is to replace the pivot screw(allen head) with a regular bolt of the proper metric thread. Sometimes the hex gets full of lead, have to torch it out to tighten - no prob with bolt. Haha

I did this after I was having an issue with flashing on the hole opposite the sprue plate screw. This was early last year and after running that mold and seeing how well it worked, I did the same thing all but the last one I purchased. I loved the way an Accurate Mold operates and wondered my MP Molds were made without a second hold down screw. Maybe calling it a sprue plate stop is more accurate.

I bought all of the exact screws from McMaster-Carr along with the metric taps and drill bits. The hole the blankety blank roll pin was in just needed to be tapped for my molds.

It is an improvement to a fine mold!
