Moose load with CB

Hi!

i'm currently looking to reload for the moose hunting season, here's my options before going to J-word bullets:

-8mm mauser 246gr boolit loaded for 1950fps (somewhat innacurate load at 100Y...)
-303 british 215gr loaded for 1800fps

What do you think? I want a clean kill and we are going to shoot UNDER 150'. The 303B load is tested and accurate enough but i don't know what i need to get a clean kill...

Accuracy - put the bullet where needed, most likely it will penetrate all the way through.
Soft enough bullet to expand some.

Don't you mean 150 yards? Under 150' (50 yards) you could use just about anything.

Use the 8 x 57; it’s got a higher sectional density and will penetrate better...

303 BR and 6.5x55 Swede are the two most common calibers to kill moose. Not sure how inaccurate your 8x57 is but it is bad defineately use the 303 BR. Good luck!

I live in moose country in eastern canada, 6.5x55 is not allowed. This big guy will be taken in the backyard, i want to end his tenure in the most humanely/abrupt way. 303 will be the solution.

Work on your 8mm load. It is one of the very best for accuracy and kill in cast bullets. I would look for a Loverin type bullet around 260+ grains.

I have the lee 8mm MAX 246gr flatnose, home made lube with aluminium gas checks. what is the speed needed to get a clean kill with this boolit?

Thank you in advance. Not mentioned but if you want accuracy you most definitely want a gas checked bullet @ 1800 fps/anything over 1500 fps gets G.C. ed at my house even with a alloy of 16-20 BHN /Ed

A lot of moose have been killed with the 303 because it was widely used after WW2 in Canada. In Scandinavia, where moose are called "elg" the 6.5x55 with 160 gr bullets is also popular due to it being military surplus. I'm pretty sure the distribution of moose means those two have each killed more moose than even the 30-06.

Post a pic of your moose when it’s down! Either gun and load will do the job. I’d use which ever one your most confident with. Moose are big animals so I would assume a heavy for caliber boolit will help with a pass through.

You want to "put him out of his misery" in most efficient, quick manner.
Lacking a cast bullet load, caliber starting with 45,
At 50yards, perhaps a 12 ga with slugs may be better than a 303 or 8mm cast bullet???
Otherwise, I would choose a quality jacketed expanding bullet for either the 303 or 8mm

.535 RB soft lead kills a moose, Proved it when in Maine 1 shot dead moose moved less than 30 yards. Double lung shot complete penetration 1997 season

The 303 will be the choice, the rifle has been glass bedded in the buttstock and is giving really good results. I'm eager to post a pic with a moose.

Each caliber would do good. If your 303 Brit shoots good use it.on lead hardness I don’t know never killed anything that big. I would think wheel weights mixed 50/50 with pure lead would do good
