I have Saeco #454 (300 grain SWC-GC) bullet molds whose 305 ± 7 grain bullets have a .375-inch meplat. I use heavily loaded 45 Colt ammunition in Rossi 92 24-inch barreled 45 Colt and Freedom Arms 97 (as back-up protection for the extremely high numbers of bears) for whitetail and elk hunting in my forested area where shots are limited to well under 100 yards.
While using the heavy load is tolerable and desirable for my revolver during the long hunting season, it's not fun to plink with. I want to hollow point my Saeco #454 (Brinell ≈ 11) bullets to create an easy to shoot 45/250–260/1000 handload. But I want to hollow point by simply drilling (or milling) a large hole through the meplat of bullets I cast. I do not want to alter my molds with a hollow point insert that one of our members offers.
Excluding after-market alteration of my bullet molds, what is an inexpensive way to hollow point my bullets? I have no drill press. I have no room for one anyway. I've been thinking about something like a fitted cylinder slipped onto the bullet. Insert a drill head through a hole and twist by hand?? Sounds kludgy to me, but maybe one of you has created some simply easy way to achieve the result I want?
