H&R Topper Deluxe

I bought a used H&R Topper Deluxe 12 gauge at a local gun dealer and have a couple of questions. Is it the same as a regular Topper, just with a plated receiver? It seems that all the mechanical components are smooth but I don't think it has been tampered with (appears to have been shot very little and was well cared for). I know there are some H&R experts who can help and thanks in advance for your assistance.

They are great shotguns. Yours is a fancy one. The older ones had rebounding hammers, after that they had a transfer bar system. Every home should have a Topper IMO.

Good point. The transfer bar came out in the mid to late 1970's, I think.

I put about a bazillion shells through my .410 with the rebounding hammer with absolutely no problems. Every transfer bar gun I have been around, either rifle or shotgun, the transfer bar has broken after some use.

They aren't all that hard to change out, nor were they very expensive; but it is very disappointing to hear a click instead of a bang.

guy had a 410 deluxe and had it listed as a 28in full.
most all toppers had a 26 or 24 choke or could say modified
so had him send some pics a
as he said its a 28in full chrome and the walnut stock
i have shot trap with it and they dont get away if i am on the bird
this is a 488 i did put hammer spur for gloves on it

I have two, a 20 gauge and stub 44-40, my wife has my first one ( 490 Jr. 20 gauge-first gun 1972), and my youngest daughter has a nice 158 Topper .410 with walnut and case color finish. I could live off the land with any of them. I like the rebounding hammer better, too.

I had a "Shikari" which was based on the Topper in 45/70...sweet looking and great shooter

Great "Agricultural" utility guns. Every rural household should have one. Having an extra rifle-caliber barrel which matches your everyday carry revolver is a bonus, or even a deer/varmint rifle, whether a .30-30, .22 Hornet or .44-40...

Eons ago on another planet in another galaxy long ago, light years away they made a .44-40. I would not trade mine for a carload of ARs or AKs. Give me my 1905 Colt Single Action Frontier Six Shooter and my H&R garden gun with both rifled and smooth bore, choked .44 barrels and I am good to go. Turn of the 20th century ideal survival gun. Anything from mice to moose.
