I'm getting desperate for one of these. Appreciate any help you can offer in finding one for me. I want one of the newer ones, with cut checkering and Ballard rifling. Not looking for a Cowboy gun.

A dealer should be able to find you one. Marlin makes them in spurts so it's amatter of catching one in stock.

Good choice. I've had one for a while and have really run the hot .38 Specials through it. One broken firing pin in over 20K rounds.

Don't even think of looking for one used. Doubt you'll find one./beagle

Not that simple. My dealer cannot find one, they are almost non-existent on the auction sites and if one comes up, it sells for $100 over retail. Marlin needs to make a lot more of them, but they'd rather make the more expensive Cowboy models.

I saw my first 357 MARLIN for sale in a long time last week...a 24 inch Cowboy that had been sent back to the factory because of a defective barrel, according to the counter man at the shop; uncheckered stock..... FOR $675!!!! I'll go past just to see if it is still in the rack sometime this week.

Come to think of it, you don't see many 44s in the used rack either.

I Paid $705 for my 24" CB. They are hard to find. I'd snatch it up.

It is one fine carbine as I've had mine since the early 80's. it prefers bullets up to 160 grains in weight ,heavier bullets aren't all that accurate in mine as I've used the Lyman 170 grain Keith & their 195 RB CB, with poor results. However it does work well with lighter bullets. Also, .38 Special ammo works very well with it. A great plinker that is quite pleasant to shoot. Quite amazing to shoot at 6" & 12" gongs at 100 yards and more using .38 Special handloaded ammo..it seemingly never misses!

I want one too.

You and everybody else!

If I had not just bought a 30/30 MARLIN and was sending it back to the factory to be made into a 30/30 Cowboy rifle, I'd have a 357 Cowboy rifle with a checkered stock and a second one with a smooth stock. I had a 1894C and gave it to my step daughter as a gift AFTER I got the 357 Cowboy. The 24 inch Cowboy (in 357 or 44) is a jewel....Discontinuing that barrel length is right up with RUGER dropping Original Size VAQUEROS.

:cbpour::redneck::Fire:

PS If you don't get one of the 357s, you won't have to buy Buffalo Barbie a new set of 357 VAQUEROS!

I bought mine in 84. It has the 18in bbl and plain stock. It's a sweet handling little gun and will hold 9 357 0r 10 38's. It handles the 38 158 rnfp like a dream. The 18in bbl makes it easy and light to carry. Wish I would have know how much people would want them. Back then a used one with dings and such was selling for 150-175.

I also purchased mine in 1984 (same year--same model--I never realized that until now!) and the total price, with tax, was $185.94...It shoots strickly cast boolits now and the 358429 is the best performer. It is 'scoped and will shoot 2" groups, and sometimes less, at 100 yards. Sure glad I purchased mine...BCB

I bought a 20 onch carbine at Big 5 no checkrering and hard wood not walnut but at $350 it works well. I think they are up to around %400 now. I modified the mag tube (actually all I did was file a round groove in the front band screw and the rifle now holds 10 rounds in the mag.

For the kind of money the 357 Marlins are bringing you guys might want to look at the NHR 357s. I bought a 45lc used and have had great luck with it even though it is heavier than the Marlin. Scoping might be a problem though.

I have one in a 357 that I will not part with, and I know where there is one in a 44 mag that I have been looking at but the guy wants 400 for it, and I don't want to spend that much. I will go and check here in a week or two and see if he still has it, then I will offer him 300 for it. Good luck in your search, they are really hard to find.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

What really hurts is that less than 6 months ago I had one, new in the box, had reclined in my safe for 5 years or more, and I had never used it! In a flash of what could only be called insanity, I sold it for $400 'cause that's what I remember paying for it, figured I could always buy another one easily. Ha Ha.

Too bad that you sold yours. This is one nice carbine as it shoots .38 Specials very accuartely. I had many a nice afternoon plinking with mine shooting at a variety of steel cans and steel plates. One enjoyable scenario was to shoot at a plate and to move back ten yards and to fire again. I was amazed as to how far I could move back & still hit it offhand. The only limitation seemed to be my eyesight! I load mine single shot so I don't scuff up the ammo (I reload) and the ammo lasts much longer that way.

I ran across one in a pawn shop and while back. It was a beater though so I passed. I sure wish Marlin would make these in stainless to match my other models.

THere's one on the shelf in my local gun shop now. Had been hunting for one for a long time and finally got it. Now this one shows and sits there, no takers. I don't know what they want for it though.

If it's one of the newer ones with cut checkering, and the price isn't too awful, I'm interested. PM me the price if you find out.

I love my CP, wouldn't part with it for nothing. Only thing is I would like to have the smooth/narrow cowboy furniture instead of the checkered stuff(anyone have some they want to part with?)

I put a Marbles Tang sight on it and a Williams Firesight front, it will shoot one ragged hole at 50yrds with 3 rnds with 180 boolits and 16.5gr H110.

Buddy of mine just got a '94 private party in .44 for $350

One of our forum members graciously found me a new Marlin in a store near him. The listed price was $479.95, which is about the lowest I've seen recently. I zigzagged back and forth on buying it or not. It is still a lot of money. In the end, considering the $50 extra it was going to cost me at this end, I backed out. In the coming years there are going to be hard times for a lot of people and I expect a lot of good guns will be coming on the market at much lower prices than they were bringing recently. If not, I still have my Rossi. I'll get someone to put a receiver sight on it and it'll be fine.

I finally took mine out today. We had record temps (73 degs) here today.

Scrounger, just to let you know, I could not miss with the 1894C today. Was shooting a 100 yrd silhouette Ram at 100 yds free handed. Then tried a 10 inch swinger plate at about 60 yrds then and then 8 incher. Its a real shooter, I think I'm gonna add a Skinner sight come Spring.

Not too bad for a blurred sight picture with the bifocals and all.

I shot 158 and 125 gr .357 JHP and both seemed to work fine.

My main range piece/time is using 38 spl so theres no issues in feeding it. The normal diet will soon only consist of 38 spl LSWC.

I found this one in used cond at the fun store. It looks nearly new.

The Salesman said that this rifle was bought and was given to some guys young son. I'm glad the the youngin didn't like it. I hope that boy is a happy as I am :-D

Good Luck

Good luck on finding a 357 Marlin. My 357CB shoots under an inch at 50 yards with 4 different cast boolits and half inch with 180XTP's.I liked it so much I got a 35 Rem also and it is quite accurate also.My favorite is my 24 inch 45colt CB.I'm very fond of 45's,they've always worked well for me.I've read that the Cowboy's might get dropped out of production for a while,I hope not.Marlins seem to be getting harder to get a bargain price,it took a couple years to get a 35 Rem at a price I wanted to pay.The Cowboy's didn't come cheap but glad to have them.

Theres a .357 1894C at the local Sportsman's Warehouse for $499. Last time I checked, just a couple days ago, there was only one other SW that had any, and they had two of 'em in stock. Kind of a hard rifle to find for a decent price.

How are they for coyotes...? What cast bullet loads can I use and what kind of accuracy and range can I use it at?? I have molds for 200 gr., Lyman 357156,477, and a 6 cav. Lee SWC. Also a 6cav. Lee for 9mm, 120gr TC might be alittle under sized. Haven't shot my Marlin 94 yet and had it for awhile so it is cured.....if you know what I mean. The microgrooved barrel was't my choice as I would have preferred the Ballard in a Win. or Marlin. I have Win 231,Bullseye, Unique & 2400 powders. [smilie=1:[smilie=1:afish4570

Earlier this year I picked up a 1894c with out the cross-bolt safety and had Marlin convert it to a 38spl Cowboy Competition with a pistol grip and no checkering. Here are some pictures of it, I hope to cast some boolits for it tomorrow.

I bought 2 1894's in .357 back in 96. Same year that I bought 2 336's in 35 Rem. Purchases that I have never regretted.

Love those guns. Out of my entire collection of rifles, (over 75) These are by far not the most expensive, or the most acclaimed, but they are my favorites.

The 1894's are good guns but I like the 92 Winchester copies better. I have a Navy Arms 357 and it is a sweet shooting gun.

Who's to say? I'd pay that much out the door for a new one, but in my case I'd have to pay $75 to $100 additional for shipping and dealer charges on this end. And that makes it too much in my book.

Well I caved in today and bought one, New, $500 shipped. That's as good a deal as I'm going to get I think. I'm in a mood to cull out some of my guns and keep just those that will stay with me to the end. The .357 Marlin is most definitely one of those, as is a 9MM Browning Hipower or rather the KBI copy I'm also going to buy shortly. Six handguns went to the little gunshop on consignment yesterday because I don't want to go through the shipping hassle by selling them on the Internet. Six rifles will shortly go onto GunBroker for sale. I'll be looking for a supply of 9mm Luger brass, another mold or two, and I'll be ready for the long haul. Err, make that "the probably not so long haul"....

Gun is on the way, now I have to start thinking sights. The 5D would work for me but the gun is no longer drilled and tapped for it. The Foolproof mounts on top but I understand it hangs off the rear a bit. Does anyone have actual pictures of one installed so i can see whether I could live it or not????

Go over to marlinowners.com and then the forum for SKINNER sights. They are popular there and appear to be well made AND excellent service from Tim Skinner himself on questions/problems. I have LYMAN #66s on some older MARLINS, but haven't bought any in years.:cbpour::redneck::Fire:

I just looked them over. The sight appears to be well made and reasonable in price. The only problem I see is that the aperture is too far from the eye. The closer to the eye, the better it works. I just don't like tang sights. I just wanted to see a picture of a Foolproof mounted on an 1894, I think I might be able to live with it. I was reading somewhere that some owners have drilled and tapped an additional hole in the top of the receiver that locates the sight more appropriately. If it's done neatly, I can't see any harm from it, as I have no intention of ever getting rid of that gun It would be a value factor only to collectors and I hate those (type of file) anyway for driving up the price of good guns so users can't afford them

More and more, the thought of that fifth hole in the Marlin 1894 receiver top appeals to me. It would allow usage of either the Foolproof or 5D without overhanging the receiver rear. It would move the sight forward exactly one half inch which should eliminate the overhang without moving the aperture too far forward. The new hole is to be drilled one half inch forward of the number two hole, thus becoming number three in a five hole series. I have several 63 and 63B bases here, so I will drill my hole in one of them and thus make it a template for actually drilling my rifles. Just to make sure it's what I think it is, what is the correct drill size to drill the hole to be tapped?

Dave B

You should try a 5D on it before you drill it. Mine works fine.

Is this one of the newer Marlins that isn't drilled and tapped on the side of the receiver for the sight? If so, how much does it overhang the receiver rear? Williams says you have to use the extended hammer spur if you use their sights.
