I got back from my Dad & Mom's house (now known as the Grandparents house) and some how his Marlin 30-30 from 1967 followed me home. :)

Well I just got done taking it completely apart and cleaning out some 30 yr old oil an stuff.

Put it all together, put the scope back on it an was rummaging around for my 30-03 reloading stuff.

Found some brass, got lots a boolits to pick from.

and no dies.

I can't find or I never had any 30-30 reloading dies! That sucks!

Guess I'll have to find some.

Can ya believe that crap! No 30-30 dies.

How about sizing the body in a 375 win die and the neck in a 30 carbine or some other short 308 type ?

You're not a reloader unless you have 30-30 dies. It's a law, I think.

I once heard about a fellow who didn't have 30-30 dies.
Nobody in town talks about it much and it is not allowed to speak his name.
They say he was well liked before people found out.
It's a shame that these things have to happen.

DJ,

As you know I had a Marlin 30-30, but changed it to the 35/30-30 and I still don't have dies for it!!!!!

Seriously, neck sizing is really all you need until you DO get some proper dies.

Very suspicious, that. Not having the die set is one thing, not everyone reloads (yet). But to have never owned a 30-30.......is SUBVERSIVE.

Too much of loading rifles from the front end first accounts for this. It's the only possible explanation.

Wow DJ,

Not having 30-30 dies is kinda like not having a set of 270 dies. I have never owned a 270 nor will I ever buy one, but I may someday get one on a trade, but I do have a set of dies for one. I can not imagine someone who is a hand loader not having dies for the following: 30-30, 270, 30-06, 308, and 243 dies even if they don't have the guns for them. With those being some of the more popular calibers, an avid shooter is bound to end up with one of each of those rifles in his possession at some point in his life. :kidding:

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

I have a RUGER #1 with a heavy barrel which was once a WIN.308 INT.MATCH barrel from A MOD70. I bought a 30-30 reamer and cut a new chamber. It's one of my favorites. I also have enough brass to last my decendents thru all the generations. I have two or three sets of dies. I am not sure. I like to have more than one set so I don't have to take a seating die apart when I change from one bullet design to another. For cast bullet target shooting it is hard to beat. The Germans setteled on a similar case for target shooting in there 8.15x46 R. It's easy to make the 8.15 cases from american 30.30.

I once found myself in the same delima, I let a friend talk me out of my 94 30-30 for his son, who kept it a few months and sold it. Burn! So I let another person have my dies so that recently I had to buy another set when my sons gave me a 30-30. I knew the gun was coming, so the dies were here by the time the gun was. Never sell a gun or dies, or Murphy's law will get you.

Well DJ,

Since you have a set on the way I guess you can hang out with us again, and not have to wait until they show up. LOL I am just glad you was able to get a set on the way in such short order. I hope you have plenty of 30 cal boolits, because you are going to enjoy shooting that rifle. I had my 30-30 for over 10 years and never pulled the trigger on it, because I was convinced I wouldn't like it. Now I step out on the back deck a couple times a week and blast at a 12x12 iron plate 100 yards down in the field with it. They are fun, fun rifles.

I don't have a tirty-tirty (and I live in Michigan!) or dies. Sad, I know. But I do have 35 Rem. dies, is that close enough? Unfortunately the Marlin that they went with got traded (oh, the shame of it all).........but someday I WILL have another one.

Real reloaders size the body of the case with a 32 Special die then neck size with a .308 die. I may have seated with a 308 die.or a 30 Rem die. About two sessions of that foolishness and I went to a gun show and got a setof 30-30 dies, lots easier.

I have a set of 300 Wby. dies. Don't have one, don't particularly want one, but if I get rid of them, I know what will happen. I think the surest way to get a gun given to you, or sold to you at a price you just can't pass up, is to sell or give away your dies and brass. Murphy's Law is in effect. I also have 221 fireball dies and brass, I don't dare let them get away. I hadn't owned a 38 special in 40 years, came by some brass, gave it away. Of course I was made an offer on a gun that I just couldn't pass up, the whole family enjoys shooting it, so of course I had to buy brass, multiple molds(5 so far), dies (several sets), small pistol primers, turns out the bargain gun was very expensive.

Boerrancher
12-04-2008, 10:34 AM
I know all about bargain guns becoming expensive, and I am heading to a big gunshow this Sun, at the Gateway Convention center where I a sure I will loose some more of my hard earned cash on one of my bargain guns.

I am only going there to look for dies, moulds, cheap brass, and powder. Since I have sworn I will not buy another gun, there will be a deal on one that I can't really pass up, and I will end up buying one. I guess I will just have to tell the wife it is her Christmas present. That worked once with near her birthday, when I bought a Walther P-22 and told her it was hers. The only problem is she took me serious and I don't get to use it that much, as it has become her carry gun for around the farm.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

I do not own a set of 30-30 dies, or rifle. But I own both styles of 7.5 SWiss (1911 long rifle and K31), 6.5, 7, 7.65, and 8 mm Msusers, and a few others. So I am still a reloader. Hmmm.. do not own a lever action asnything, either. Not even anything in a "traditional" American roifle caliber... Just all those oddballs, like 8mmJ Mauser...

Had a 32 WS in Winchester 94 that was given to me by an old shooter who had one foot in the grave. Sold it to get a .38 Taurus 85 which I have carried for the last 10 years. I never could get that old '94 to group lest than 12" at 100 yds.

Then I backed into a '94 circa 1929 in 30-30 and a Baker 12 Ga. double. I really wanted the Baker because that was my first shotgun and the winne was to boot.

I love the '94. I mold boolits for it and with a small charge of Unique it has given me sub 2" groups at 100 yds and is really fun and cheap to shoot. I neck size only with cheapo Lee dies and I have some brass on the 16th firing with no problems.

The Baker still kicks as hard as the old one my dad let me shoot in the 50's so I recently got a Norinco '97 copy, added a butt pad and a Cutts Compensator. It now looks really nasty but shoots like a pussycat. Loaded with #4 shot it is my primary home defense gun which is kept in the master bedrom.

Of course I always carry the .38 Taurus {sans hammer spur} in my pocket to allow me to fight my way to my real Weapon of choice a 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun which carries 10 rounds internally and 11 more on the butstock and receiver. I love those Aguila super short 12 gauge rounds. Six .33 cal buckshot in a very short case which give me 10 rounds instead of only 6 in my Norinco.

I get a nice pattern of about 14" at 20 feet and I know that the errant shots are not going to travel 200 feet to takeout Grandma Smith down the street in her Kitchen.

If anybody can look at the muzzle of that shotgun at 20' and not have grave reservations about continuing antisocial activities they deserve to ingest what I have for them. There is something about the sound of a 12 gauge shotgun when pumped to ingest a fresh round that cause an involuntary spasm of the sphincter ring.

If however this sound does not cause an intruder to change his miscreant behavior then you may have to clean your shotgun after you dispatch your new aquaintance.

Remember proper gun control means hitting the center body mass. Although I kinda favor trying for the belly button area. Hitting and breaking the pelvic bone generally takes everyone down to the ground. Is this not the purpose of shooting an individual? We never shoot shoot to kill anyone, only to stop them from killing us..........right?
