View Full Version : Favorite levergun and why?

I know alot of people discuss this but what is your personal favorite levergun? Not the most sold, or most used... Just your personal opinion.

Is it durable, a heirloom, good shooter, or maybe you just like the manufacturer, easy to modify, or reload for?

Mine is 1886. Its durable and sturdy in hand. Also shoots large calibers capable of taking anything I want.
I modified mine alittle to fit my needs better.

Its expensive to shoot, even if I reload, but it has sentimental value and is my favorite.

No original part was modified...

The plain old Winchester 94 (1894) in .30-30, I think. The '92 was a great rifle, but handicapped by the black powder pistol loads when compared to the smokeless .30-30. Apparently over 6 million shooters also like them. Recoil is easy to handle. Ammo is relatively cheap.
Rifle is durable and accurate, lightweight, usually trouble free. The Marlin 336 is a runner up, but for me it just doesn't handle like the 94.

I must be the odd man out as I like both the Marlin 336 because the flat top makes easier to put on a scope. And while more difficult to scope the 1894 Winchester especially with the heavier octagon barrels seem to me to point better. I have two Canadian Centennials one with the 20" barrel and the other has the 26" barrel. Both were bought years apart and not part of the set as originally offered. The 26" barreled one seems to hang in there due to the added weight. Have about 4-5 30-30's, one 444,one Win 375,and two 1894 Marlins in 357 mag and 44 mag. So one can say I like lever actions. Almost forgot, have a bubba'd 99 savage in 300 savage. Won't feed from the magazine and does not have the feed ramp on the barrel. But as a single shot is surprisingly accurate. Frank

I have A LOT of leverguns, but the ones we shoot and hunt the most are Savage 99's in 308. The 308 is proven, shoots cast very well and is easy to find cases, bullets, and powders. MOA is achievable with a little tuning and load development. For elk hunting my wife carries a Savage 99 358 and I use a Marlin 45-70, but for most 'FUN' shooting we use 308's with modest cast bullets or 'cheap' FMJ bullets out to 350 yards or so. I like to fool with my Marlin 32 Special and a a 303 Savage 99, we have other levers in .223, 218 Bee, 357, 44 Mag, 444, 35 Rem, 300 Savage, 284, 243, 375, 348, 30-30, a 35-284 Short, an 8mm-08, and a 270-08 but the 308's get the workouts for deer, antelope, and meat(cow) elk. By round count a couple Henry 22's get the most shooting, then the 308's. Just one? - Savage 99 .308 Win.

My current favorite is a tuned 1894 Marlin. .38/.357 for cheap CF loads that I can produce quickly on the 1050. It sports a tang sight for CAS and I can easily mount a scope for load development. I have 8 lever actions, but it gets the most use. Easy to strip down and clean. Easy to work on.

I shoot the 1873 a bit faster, but it needs a 10 gallon hat to catch the brass...LOL.

My choice may change but I can't think of anything that will kick the Winchester 9422 off the #1 spot. I have a 94 my dad bought when I was 8 years old, but any more most of my "hunting" involves cans or empty shotgun shells that litter the ground where I like to shoot, and the 9422 works great for that. I had wanted one since they came out, but couldn't afford one. Something about feeding 5 kids and keeping a roof over their heads got in the way. After the kids grew up and left home I didn't want to pay the price they were going for. I bought a Henry for my son about 20 years ago that shoots good but it wasn't a Winchester. When my father in law died, my mother in law asked me if I would take his guns because she didn't want them in the house. I'd been married to his daughter for 40 years and knew he had several old Winchesters and a couple rust bucket single shot shotguns, but didn't know about the appears un-fired 9422. I've taken care of the un-fired part, and someday my son will get to compare the Winchester to his Henry.

Why oh why have have favorite? Why? 22, pistol cartridges, 30-30 class, high power and big bore. Marlin, Winchester, Savage, Browning BLR and more. It’s so much more fun matching caliber of lever rifle with the shooting task of the day.

The one I've used the most, since age 15, is a Marlin 1895S .45-70. It started an addiction to .45 rifles that I still have. My father bought it and a Saeco 385gr GC mold, but I cast and shot them full house much more than he did, as at age 50 he found he didn't like the recoil. Today it sees loads in the trapdoor range, since I'm over 50 now, too ;-)

I also now find that I like pre-64 Winchester 94 standard rifles a lot. I never wanted to buy the post-64 new ones as a young man, as every elder I knew said they were crap, although I shot ones that my friends had. I now have several from the 40's and 50's, including the hard to find .25-35. Just right, after all.

I can’t pick just one. :( My Henry H001 will put 15 shots into one ragged hole at 15 yards. My Marlin 1894C is my survival gun for defense and game. My Marlin 3000 is powerful and accurate. Not shown in my Winchester 94, which fits me like a glove and the sights are “right there” when I shoulder it. I guess they’re all my favorites.

Mines a 1970 centennial 336 chambered in 35 Rem. It will shoot groups all in one large hole with cast boolits at 100 yards shot with our group buy 200 grain hollow point loaded at 2100 FPS. My avatar is a group shot with it. I tested it a 200 yards with the same load and shot a few 2 3/4” groups. It’s the most accurate cast gun I own.

Here’s my first try at a 200 yard group that measured 2 3/4”. I sighted it in 1” high at 100 yards. My program said it would drop 9” at 200 yards. The black dot is 9” low for the bullseye.

Kev 18 -

I am quite fond of my Marlin M-336 XLR .35 Rem. It was from the last couple years production made @ the CT factory.

For whatever reason, it escaped the factory w/ a 1.5oz ( yes, ounce ) trigger ! I don’t know the how or why of that, but was happy the buy the rifle @ the time Marlin was being bought by Remington. The trigger was just what I wanted, as my intent was to shoot the rifle just for accuracy work, load experimentation; and not for use on live game.

My first Marlin lever rifle was a -60s M-336C .35Remington w/ micro-groove rifling, but my XLR is much better rifle. The XLR is just stupid accurate, not only because of the trigger; but also because of its superb 12 groove
Ballard rifling. When running a patch through it, the barrel appears to be slightly choked for the 2” before the muzzle. It broke in w/ just one shot, not showing any blue on patches, thereafter.

The rifle not only met, but exceeded my high expectations; making very range trip w/ me for 9+ years.
I don’t know how many times @ the range, other shooters would comment that it is a “ beautiful gun “ or
“ beautiful weapon “.

Just a great, fun gun all-around.

336 Marlins: Inexpensive, accurate, rugged, easy to scope, bolt comes out easily so you can clean from the breech end, (just don't lose the little V-spring ejector). The .35 Rem is as much horsepower as one will ever need in the eastern deer thickets where I've spent my whole life. I've had Winchesters and Savages. They're all gone, but my Marlins are still here.

Then I think about my Dad's near-mint 39a. . . . . .

My first year BB94 has taken the favorite slot from the 50s vintage 94 in 3030. Light, handy, and accurate with most anything I have fed it. The 94 design is what I want in a lever gun, in 375 Winchester, well that’s about all the power I want or need in a 6 lb rifle. Actually it’s all the power I need in anything, mastodons are rare around here! I shoot open sights and the 94s just fit me well, did I mention light weight?? I run it at 38-55 levels or just a bit above with 250 to 280 gr cast. I always wanted a 38-55 M94, always thought it was the perfect deer round in a lever. This ones close enough, has a forever home.

Uncle Virgil's Win 92 in 32/20. Got to use it for about 3 years while I was in high school. It had an about 20 inch half octagon barrel, I never measured it to know. The front sight was a nickel silver blade in a steel base, the rear was a plain barrel mounted in a dovetail like the front was mounted. The blind magazine was totally covered by the schnobble forend which had an ebony inlay in the forward end. Though it was carbine length it had a rifle butt plate. It looked identical to one in a picture in my 8th grade geography textbook. The picture was of an aerial bomb taken by the US Geodetic Survey.

My cousin now has the gun and I have not seen it in 43 years.

Edit: As to why, it is a beautiful gun that is light, handy, powerful enough without too much recoil for my old bones and it was my introduction to lever guns. Also, I have not seen a levergun with better lines, though an old Savage 99 with a slim stock does not look bad.

Mine is a 1920's vintage Winchester 94 src in 32 spl. It was my great uncles gun he bought at the railroad "company store " . I have fond memories asa child visiting uncle victor and seeing that ole gun hanging in the gunrack in the side room off the hallway . It's a family gun so it will get passed to my son . It's got honest wear and a butter smooth action . Really like that ladder rear sight it wears and makes for great fun with my plinker load of 6 grs of Bullseye shooting at longer ranges when you can see the dust being kicked up by the impact .

Savage Model 99 in .250-3000 Savage. My Dad made countless clean kills hunting deer with this gun over the years, most dropping in their tracks. He had it drilled and tapped for a Unertl 4x Hawk in the 1960s by Flaigs on the Hill. He used it in rain and snow each season like a gun should be used, then babied it with a rag soaked in some boiled linseed oil each winter. I plan to carry her this Fall.

Anyway, my favorite is my Winchester 1895 .30-06, it's always with me ( in the truck, in hand , or hanging in a saddle scabbard). Its accurate and quick handling and the round is plenty for anything in this country.

I’m going to say that it’s got to be my little Winchester 1894 AE Trapper in .45 Colt. I bought it new around 1996 or so. It’s a little tack driver. Guess now I’ll have to get it out this weekend and put a few downrange.

It’s so hard to choose.
For pure sexy appeal and love for the cartridge I have to go with my Uberti 1873 with the 18” barrel and straight stock.
You can’t beat that type of firepower in a beautiful rifle. Being able to load progressive with carbide dies and still have all that horsepower makes me happy.
If I had to keep only one it would probably be my Marlin 1894C in the same cartridge. I have a feeling it’s a little more bulletproof.

Ive re-fallen in love with 1892's having gotten one of the latest Rossi CBC made 357's. No show gun but it functions nicely, even cycles a 38 special with wadcutter loaded out. I'd been lugging bigger octagon barrel actions around for a while and had forgotten how light a 1892 round barrel is.

I've got 2 rossi 92s, a 16" and a 24" octagon. They're both super fun to shoot and very accurate with all the boolits I've put through them.

The 16" is my favorite woods gun when I'm up in Maine. It's as light as a bb gun but packs 8 rounds of 357 butt-kicking goodness. If that wont stop a charging critter, I hope I make a good meal.

I like the little trapper models.

this thread has got some legs under it

Dont like trappers - used to but now by time I put the sight fur enough down the barrel to see em - I need a longer tube
Have a 26inch barrel 92 that I like a lot - we have rapid fire events at out local club - I pretty much owned it for a good number of years and always did better shooting fast with a 66 rifle than any carbine I tried.
I reckon the "short barrel=fast handling" thing is more myth than reality - unless youse tangled up in a blackberry bush or something

Favourite lever gun for me - is the one I have in my hand when you ask the question - got a few to choose from so its all fun............................................

Original Winchester 1892 rifle in 25-20 and another original 1892 carbine in 44 WCF. Both well-used but like new inside with mint bores and almost all of the original finish. Great shooters and both love cast boolits. Old eyes made using the open sights difficult so I installed vintage tang sights (they were factory drilled and tapped for tang sights). Problem solved. I recently became the owner of a vintage NIB Browning 92 lever action in 357mag carbine; I didn't think that I would ever like a made in Japan (miroku) gun, but I have to say that this "Browning" made in Japan lever gun is as good as or better than any of my original Winchester 1892's.....I just wish that these came in 25-20, 32-20 or 44 wcf...

My Rossi M1892 in .45 Colt. With 18.5/2400/250 gr. RNFP, it carries authority to well past the range at which I can hit with it.
If they weren't as scarce as high-end gemstones (and priced similarly), I'd look around for a BLR in .358 Winchester. With one of these, I could take anything on the continent.

Good evening,

This is a tough one.....My go to is a Rossi Mares Leg with a full buttstock. Every time I pick up that little lever in 357 a peanut butter jar of ammo disappears!!! Now before you start....I live across the 49th and it is completely legal. I have a sling/belt loop holster that keeps it up and away but super easy to draw and fire. The best boolit is a LEE 158gr SWC and it pours them out as fast as I can fill’r up. I have tried both tumble lube with 45/45/10 and with BAC, 2500 and a SPG style in a regular lube sizer. All shoot about 1” @50M with Skinner peeps. Gophers and paper don’t survive and so far 2 beavers, 1 porcupine and 1 coyote didn’t get very far. We can’t carry handguns so this is my go everywhere legal everyday carry. 1000’s of rounds and 12 years later it still looks good and shoots even better!!
My #2 is a Marlin 39.....

The few lever guns I have owned: Daisy Spitt'n Image '94, Winchster 1894 in 32SPCL (1930's) Teddy Rosevelt 1894, Winchester 9422, Marlin 94CB, Henry 22, and Winchester 1892 by Miroku. Life is good!

I know alot of people discuss this but what is your personal favorite levergun? >>SNIP<<

All of them, ANYTHING with a lever.

I grew up watching the cowboy shows and movies and just couldn't wait till I could get one. Before my 13th Christmas there was a long box under the tree, and I just KNEW it was my Winchester, or Marlin, I did not care, as long as it had a lever. When I opened the box Christmas morning there was a RUGER 10/22 in it! I asked my dad where the lever was, he said it's a semi-automatic and it did not NEED a lever. As a kid I couldn't believe how stoopid my dad was.

I couldn't believe I did not get a lever rifle. Add insult to injury he wouldn't give me the mag so I'd "value every shot, and hit what I aimed for". All winter I got squirrels, and rabbits in back of our house (we lived at the foot of a mountain) and I got pretty darn good with it.

That spring, my friends (who all had lever .22's) laughed at me and called it my AUTO-MAGIC and laughed even more when I had to struggle to load it with ONE ROUND varmint hunting with them.

Well my AUTO-MAGIC had a little scope sighted in for 40 yards and we went out one day and saw a big old crow in a tree waayyy off in the distance and since everybody knew a shot with a .22 at those distances (maybe 70/80+ yards) was impossible and they told me to see if my AUTO-MAGIC could do it.

I prayed a silent prayer (the best one ever), took a breath, sighted the cross hairs above the bird to add some Kentucky elevation, squeezed the trigger, and that bird exploded in black smoke and tumbled to the ground. My AUTO-MAGIC earned respect and I realized how smart my dad was after all :-)

So, if it has a lever, I'm down with it. Oh today I DO have a 1940's Marlin 39A .22 and an 1895 in .45-70, both are cherished. Both have stories behind them but too long and I'm not a typist :-)

I have to go with Winchester 94, as long as it has good workmanship. No other rifle fits me better, like it was designed for me. I shoulder it and my eye immediately picks up the front sight through the aperture and cheek weld is effortless. I gave my pawn shop rescue 94 some exercise tonight and was reminded of this fact. A close second would be the Marlin 1894.

I’ve always lusted after my brothers 336 marlin in .35 Remington, but I do love my Winchester 94s, but the special one is a late 1980s trapper carbine in 44mag, it’s handy light weight accurate and has a one of the nicest factory stocks I’ve even seen- and how it came to be mine was also a wild
Story- for another time
but real
Reason it’s my favorite it’s the rifle my daughter took her first deer with, and all subsequent ones as well, we cast boolits for it, sized them, powder coated them, loaded them up made several range trips and I was sitting right behind her when she dropped a large doe with a neck shot , it’s all documented here in the hunting with CBs section. It was my most memorable hunt and gave us a lot of time together before she went from my little side kick munchkin to a full grown woman.
Side note; my son just turned 2 in October, this year getting ready for deer season my daughter said-“ dad he can’t have my rifle but if Jackson wants to shoot his first deer with it I’d be happy” so we will have a family first deer rifle. And please bear with me on this trip
Down memory lane, does it still count as my favorite even though she now owns the rifle?

I shoot an old henry 22 the most out of all my guns, but I would boil all my leverguns down to just the model 53 in 32-20 (a special run of the '92). Pop, hit. Not too loud, cheap to shoot and still hits with enough authority. I have a 1881 in 40-60 that may replace the 53 as I'm in Idaho now and there is the potential for big bears.271212

14 years ago a co-worker sold me a Rossi PumaM92 in 44 mag. Steel buttplate! Holds 11 rounds? We took it out and it keyholes at 50 yards, might hit a big piece of cardboard, 320 gr. whistling copper slugs (ouch, hurts on both ends) he said he didn't want it, so I gave him $100 for it. He was embarrassed to take that much, he thought $20 would be fair, 1200 dirty 44 brass, 100 handloads (that I pulled, he liked hotloads), and boxes of jacketed .429, whole pile $200. So about then I started reading here and discovered Keith boolits for my Ruger, tried one in the Rossi; .430+ and the Rossi bullseyes the 100 yard gong.
Didn't tell him. Should I? It's a neat little carbine...Made a closed leather sheath for it, carried it on the quad.
So thanks for the forum! And Keith boolits!

Got pictures from my cousin but uploads failed. I resized to 800x240ish and less tha 170 kb but they will still not upload. Will try again in a day or three.
