It weights 16 lbs, about a foot long, and made of stone. The hole goes right through and is not threaded.

Looks like it might be part of a table base?

I don't have it with me. I'm in MA, it's in CA but that's a possibility.

I'd guess it to be the end piece for a clamp that holds something that can move back & forth on rails or
something that works like the bottom piece for the tail piece adjustment on a lathe bed.

Does a magnet stick to it? It looks like cast iron too me.

OK, here's my scientific guess. Looks to be made to clamp the top of wine barrels in place after they are filled. The oblong hole is used hold another piece of wood from the clamp to the cover of the wine barrel. That's my best guess, Frank

"It weights 16 lbs, about a foot long, and made of stone."
It does look like cast iron.
With only to legs, it might have something to do with outdoor furniture.
Oval hole on the bottom and round coming out might be for a support pole.

Made of stone, valve rocker on Fred Flintstones car?

I'm not sure if it's really made of stone - I'm getting 3rd hand info. It could be soapstone. I like the Fred Flintstone theory - maybe it held his car's air cleaner cover on.

Looks like a clamp that holds a gasketed access cover in place on a low pressure hydro pneumatic tank.
Curved plate would have a screw through the middle that goes through the center hole and is tightened in place using the pictured item as the strongback.

Finding out what it's made of will help alot. If it is soapstone, I'm wondering if it's some sort of churn. Soapstone can be shaped, sanded, heated, and it's not very porous. If it's cast iron, we're back to the Flintstone mobile.

I think it is the beam of a heavy book press. Or some other kind of similar press.

Looks like some manufactured type of man way cover for a vessel such as boiler or tank. Older ones were cast and thick, new ones still in use are formed with thinner steel, with same type shape though.

Look like cast iron to me, put a magnet on it.

Have a blessed day,

It's in CA, I'm in MA. A family member will soon check it out more.

Weight for a cheese press or apple press.

For what it's worth, that item is cast iron.

I don't think there is any doubt that it is the main beam in some kind of heavy press. Many hand presses years ago were made on that principle.

Yup, and given the shape of the hole one for which the press plate could move.

The fact that there are no provisions to hold the item down as a cross bar leads me to believe that it was a clamp to pull something up as others have suggested.

It's that thing, that attaches to the other stuff, that is used for that other thing, that works like the other doohickey.
At least that's what I think it's for.

Part of either a cheese press or Sauerkraut press? Easy to clean soapstone with boiling water. Just a thought.

Cheese [emoji893] is pressed, sauerkraut is not. Only a sterilized cloth wrapped plate is used to keep out air.
