Got an NOE 311 188 FN Hunter three cavity mold that I don’t use much and thought I would try to modify it to enlarge the meplat somewhat. Now I’m not a machinist nor do I have a machine shop, but I’m dumb enough to try it one time. I ran an end mill into one of the cavities an here is what I ended up with. Wanted something to shoot in my 30-30. What do you think?

How’s it shoot? I ground a D reamer to alter a Lee 93 RN to flat, feathered it into the old cavity and stabilized by the grease groove in the mold. Worked pretty well, now I need to find it and do my 6 cavity.

Looks kind of odd, but if it works and you are satisfied, that is all that matters.

Sorry but you should have taken a drill bit, increased its taper with a grinding wheel, or used a conical cutter with a diameter equal to flat nose. But the real problem is to center exactly the new cavity, otherwise the ball turns off axis!

I’ve been considering that and have actually sized up various bits and ball grinding stone to even out the transition on the nose. I only modified one of the three cavities, so if I can get this one to work, I’ll try the other two.

Ok, I decided to modify the transition to the flat nose to make it less abrupt. Left to right is the new bullet, then the original modified one and last is the unmodified. The one on the left appears to have a canted nose, but it actually doesn’t, that’s just how the picture turned out.
