Is anyone making .45 Caliber Shot Shells for use in a 1911 Auto. Not a new pistol, original 1911.
How much and what powder are you using? Do they cycle in a 1911 Auto?
A friend saw my 38 Special Shotshells I just made up and asked if I could make some in 45 for him.
Not really sure if they will cycle in the pistol smoothly, that's the reason for the question and load data.
Thanks for the help.

I use CCI shotshells in mine, they work well, problem is finding them now.

I have a set of the RCBS shotshell dies and load 4.5 grains of 452AA or WST with the Remington SP410 shotcup. They cycle the M1911 just fine and pattern well to 20 ft. RCBS no longer makes the dies. They were always special order and expensive. I would find some of the CCI shotshells and try them in your pistol. They should feed and cycle.

About two computers ago I had a website in my favorites that gave dimensions for making your own .45 shotshell die. I have since lost it, maybe a search will turn it up again???

It is possible to make workable shotshells without the die set, but it involves a lot of trial and error. I got extremely lucky one day and bought both the loading die set and a forming die set at an auction; had to buy two biggish boxes of stuff to get both sets, but I knew what they were and what they were worth.

Have a few GI issue shotshells, not handy now, but IIRC stamped RA 44. These were in survival kits issued to pilots in WWII and were intended to harvest small game at close range. Have to be hand cycled in a 1911.

Rich/WIS,
That was my first thought, they would have to be hand cycled in the 45 Auto.
Being we are both antique and vintage weapon collectors, hunters and users, I told him he should get a nice quality 45 Revolver from the same era.

They can be made using 41 mag dies, and will work the action on a M1911.

This subfourm (Shot Shell Loads for Pistol) contains all the info, you just need to dig.

Here are the 'usual' suspects for manuals.

I have made them. It's not hard. I have the Lyman 41 mag dies, and also have the rcbs 45 shotshell die set that they do not make any more.
The rcbs dies are better, but nothing wrong with the 41 mag die way.
There used to be great videos on ammo channel on how to do it, but YouTube is lame and doesn't allow reloading videos so the links are broken.
However, the how to is still up. You can still buy the August 1979 edition of handloader magazine. (Here) https://www.wolfeoutdoorsports.com/handloader-80-july-1979/
It’s about $10 It has all the info you need.
