new cast boolitgun

well have got the bug to build me a 200yd cast boolit meat masher! i think it will be a 450 Marlin i have started to gather parts (1) savage 110 lh in 300 winmag for the base and starter stock need to get a barrel and buy or rent a reamer, moulds dies, sizers, top punchs. the big ? now is barrel twist i want to shoot 300-400gr fast! the factory twist is 1/20 . any ideas to share? all will be pondered and used to make make my mind up at this time i am thinking a 1/20 heavy contour 24" thanks for your input clint ::coffeecom:castmine:

Given the action you have you might want to consider the .458 WinMag. Yes cases are expensive but then so are .450 Marlin cases. There also is the option of of the .458 American and forming case from any standard magnum case. can't do that with the longer headspace of the Marlin case. I wouldn't go any quicker than 20" with the twist. My Siamese Mauser 45-70 has a 22" twist and it handles every bullet up through 510 gr. Especially accurate with 350-415 gr cast bullets.

yes i thought of a 458 winmag but did not think that i needed the case volume to push a 300/400 boolit. am on the lookout for a 457122 as my boolit to start with. i like my brass to be the right headstamp and also want a factory chambering with your info in mind i may look for a 1/24 barrel thanks clint

got to move on my project today the barrel is coming from Douglas 458 1/22 twist rcbs 3set dies and 50 newbrass traded for mold 458122 sizer and top punch ordered from Midway also talked with Clymer on getting a reamer the meatmasher is coming together!! have fun clint

update got barrel contoured ,fit chambered , crowned to 25" started working up loads and the best part shooting!the stock for now is the savage stock reworked(got a nice curly maple blank for later) Was going over targets tonite and the last 8 at 100yds average at 1.8 '' plus the 2 i shot today at 200yds average at3.5 . not bad for 2 different boolits and 6 different loads. know to start weigh the boolits. have the banded front site ,barrel band sling swivel done . the 1/4 rib started. the fun never ends clint :castmine: :drinks:

time to up day this thread! got the metal parts back form the finisher today and have got them reassembled. hope to get it sighted in tomorrow then 10/15 use it to fill my buck tags. wish me luck Clint [smilie=w: :castmine:

just back form the range all sighted in 2"high at 100yds 2"high at 200yds with the bottom dot in the vxi 2x7 lr. shot a 1.065 group at 100 and 2"at 200 [smilie=w: 3 shot groups. i think with any luck this will work on deer. the load is 330hp(457122)/55/aa2230 for at nice 2100fps.
