Cleaning 22LR Cases Before Deriming

What is the best way to clean the crud out of the cases before derimmig?
I was thinking about wet tumbling with out the steel pins.

I do 4 lbs at a time with just dawn in wet tumbler with the pins. About an hour and change it out. Repeat as needed. About 4 times if real bad dirty.
Something else I use is about 2 lbs of ss chips In with the 5 lbs of pins. I got from a guy on fb. They clean every nook and cranny of the brass. Seems to take less time also.

I boiled the crap out of them in water with a good amount of vinegar, then boiled with clean water. I am going to try the tumbling with citric and soap like zombie and slotcar

I run them through my HF ultrasonic cleaner to clean off any soot & crud before de-rimming.

Ultrasonic cleaner with simple green on hot for 90 minutes... Then in the tumbler for 60 minutes with dish washing liquid and vinegar , hot water with 2 mm stainless BB's . Then wash in a bucket of hot water with Bi carb... Then dry.. They come out really shiny...

Hot water and Dawn to get rid of most of the crud. Rinse, fresh hot water, Dawn, and a pinch of citric acid. Run for an hour. Nice and clean. No need to be shiny. After derimming, clean, and anneal. My .02.

The residue left in the rim is the stuff that really wears out the punch and adds effort to derimming. If not fully cleaned out heads pop off. Tumbler with pins (if I had chips I'd use them). Tumble again with clean or settled liquid and media. Tumble again without media just for a final rinse. An hour the first two times, 15 minutes for the rinse.

Gew has it true. it's the silica, or whatever they put in (inside) the primer that causes problems. lots and lots of washing helps but No matter how you decide to deal with it, sooner or latter, it will poke it's head out.

nun is right, I boiled the daylights out of them with all sorts of cleaners added. even after looking down inside and not seeing any residue, after de-rimming a couple hundred, the punch looked like it was pushed into sandpaper.
Im going to boil and SS pin tumble next time

So, you guys are taking unfired 22LR and converting them to jacket material? Once fired, they are de-primed and just need cleaned?

We are taking fired scrap 22lr cases and trying to super clean the residue left over from the priming mixture that is in the rim, so when we stretch out the folded rim there is no gritty crap left inside to wear down the punches.
yes, we are making jackets for .223 projectiles

Lead Styphnate priming mixture has glass added to transmit shock through the material.

I had played with 22 jkt bullets years ago but gave up, tedious.

Tumble, Tumble, Tumble. That's the only way for me to get as much grit out as possible.

Three hours in the thumbler model B with citric acid, dish soap, and 5 lbs SS pins. It still wears the punch a bit but punches are easy to make & I case harden them.

I never thought about hardening, I use grade 8 bolts to make mine, I will have to try that!
