View Full Version : Anyone have smokeless powder shipment held at UPS store for pickup?

I unfortunately rent an apartment for the next few months. I do NOT want to have a box with "Explosives" printed on it delivered to the concierge. In doing my research I can't get a clear idea as to whether I can have the HAZMAT package held at the UPS store for pickup.

Has anyone been able to have their delivery of powder held and not delivered to their address?

Thank you

Don't know if a ups store as.most are privately owned would hold your delivery but their local main depot should.

UPS Stores are kind of an unknown quantity. They are not UPS owned, are privately operated businesses, and make their own rules. Anyway, it's been that way with the ones I've used. Some of them will not accept firearms for shipment, will not knowingly handle ammo or components. You'd do well to phone the store you have in mind and discuss it with them before ordering and directing shipment to them.
There are other similar stores that are not UPS associated that act as mail drops and recipients, where you can rent a box, and they would be more likely to be of help.

I don't think it would be marked "Explosive" unless it was black powder!

Boxes have to cary the smokeless propellant placard. I highly doubt any UPS store will accept it.

My resent delivery from Powder Valley was tagged with an explosives sticker but it did also contain primers. I don't remember if the boxes with just powder were marked that way.

I just got some black powder from Powder Valley and it had a Haz-Mat label.

Did you read what I wrote? Nowhere did I say explosive. I said “smokeless propellant”. And actually that was wrong. The placard that’s on the box is “flammable solid”. Here is what I’m talking about.

Call 'em and ask.
Or better yet, go down there and ask.

Seems like the mail-hold-up thing is pretty common now. I too have a package held up by UPS. 2 or 3 weeks ago, i had another package from Graphs and Sons delayed by about 4 days at the mail terminal.

Do you have a local trusted friend or gun store close buy?

You can find out where you local ups depot is and have them hold it for pickup.

You could Also just let the conceraige desk to know what's coming and dymistyfy any questions before they come up.

Or just wait till you move out till you restock?

My last PV order said Explosive on the box even though there was just smokeless powder, a propellant. I looked it up, the label was incorrect, maybe an inspector proving what he knows.

The UPS Depots will hold anything. I often do it with powder and guns.263359

I wouldn’t expect any UPS or Fedex stores to hold powder. My local UPS and Fedex hub locations get uppity and “supposedly don’t have the proper storage areas” for powders when I’ve changed the pick up location from my home to the hub.

I’d use a friend, family member or co-worker if unable to have delivered to the apartment.

You literally quoted me. So if you weren’t responding to me why did you quote what I said?

I ship smokeless to my UPS store all the time with no problems. Call you specific store and ask.

The other thing ups has is drop points. They drop off items that need a signature at these points so you can pick them up. Here in my town it is a gas station that is open 24/7.

Ammo. I can't remember if ups or FedEx. FedEx I think and no problem.

Smokeless powder for small arms under 100lbs shipment get a flammable solids placard. Hazard Class 4.1. Ground shipment only.
If your getting small amounts of smokeless with an explosives placard on the box it's labeled wrong

It appears you don’t know how to use the quote feature properly. I’m assuming you meant to quote someone else. I will leave it at that.
