I have searched this site for .41 mag info and find it relatively sparse, especially when it comes to heavy bullets. I am interested in comments from your collective experience regarding the use of 240gr and heavier cast bullets in the .41. I am using a 6 inch Smith.

Thanks,
Dan Cash

I used to shoot an 238-grain NEI TC (w/GC) in a 10-inch DW 741 for IHMSA Silhouettes. Loaded over 20.0 grains of IMR4227, it produced right at 1320 fps and was tack-driver accurate...like 1 1/2" groups @ 50M using iron sights. However, that was in one of the old, large-frame DWs; loading for a Smith I'd probably start somewhere around 16.5-17.0 grains and work up.

A buddy used to shoot 9-10 grains of Unique behind the same boolit for a bowling pin load in his M57 with pretty fair results, too. As I recall he was getting around 900 fps from his 6-incher.

Good morning I am in Peru right now and do not have the mold # but I used 21 -22 grains w296 in my Dan wesson 41 mag 8 inch. Won Illinois AAA Revolver IHMSA that yera with that load.
I would NOT put that load in my S&W 6 Inch model 57 ! My Dan ate it for 1000++++ rounds.

240 lee swc 19 gr of 296 m-57 8 3/8 and 6.5 Blackhawk --shot well at 100 yards do not remember the group
280 SSK 18gr 296 2.5" at 50 longsteps same revolver--
20 -22gr 296 230gr keith 6" and 8 3/8" very accurate Lyman 410459
not recomending these just what I used for years -- and answering your questions
most of my other loads I have are in Redhawks
wish I still had the 57's-- at the time I had them they were considered big strong revolvers-- now that I have a DWA and the Redhawks big difference

I would be careful with a S&W. They have no problems taking pressure but recoil is what does them in.

no question but that I would shoot them a little different now than then

My Redhawk hated any bullet heavier than 210 gr. I suspect the twist rate was the problem. I'd suggest you buy a couple of boxes of commercial cast 41 heavyweights before investing in a mould. I discovered the .41 magnum made a pretty poor 44 mag substitute, and finally sold mine off. It's lind of neat if you like to be different, but there are no advantages to it at all.
