I want to use my BFR for the next deer so I checked my ammo supply. I found I had my 378 gr PB, WFN boolits loaded and could not remember what the gun is sighted for. On top of that when I pulled the gun out of the safe it was clean. No way I will hunt with a clean gun so I ran down to check it and foul the bore.
My first shot was high then the next 4 went into 1" with 3 in 5/8". Not bad for a red dot, as fast as I shot them. It is getting dark out.
I use 30 gr of 4759 and a Fed 155 primer.
I have not found anything that will not shoot out of this gun.

The first shot was from a clean barrel. That is why I don't hunt with a clean gun of any kind. Even though it was not far off enough to miss a deer. When I shot IHMSA, I would miss the first chicken with a clean gun, then hit 39 targets. I learned my lesson. [smilie=b:

44 man. Question isn't a Fed 155 a pistol magnum primer? This work ok? Obviously, based on the target. Curious made me ask. Please enlighten.

Yes, it is a pistol primer. There is no need for a rifle primer in the revolver and 4759 lights easy. I don't want the pressure of a LR primer either.
Accuracy is MUCH better with a LP mag.
I also use a Fed 150 primer for the 45-70 for BPCR.
Then you have to look at something else. Standard mainsprings on the BFR are 22 to 23#.
When you go to a cartridge that needs a LR primer like the .450 Marlin, the springs are 28#. However, I still have my doubts about needing a LR primer. Depends on the powder used.
I still put Wolfe overpower springs in my guns no matter what primer I use.
Same as the .44 and .45 with 296. I have always used Fed 150 primers once I found groups shrink by 2/3 over a mag primer.
Anytime you read that a certain primer has to be used, just ignore it and test for yourself.
The sighter group I shot was just run of the mill for the BFR. I have put 5 shots in 7/16" at 50 yd's. I have shot many groups at 100 yd's that are 1" or smaller. This gun is amazing and the nut behind it is the only reason for a poor group.
The main reason I posted is to show what a clean gun will do with the first shot.
There is only one type of gun that goes into the field clean for me and those are muzzle loaders. I don't have a problem with them.
Here are my normal groups with different bullets at 50 yd's. The right one is a sighter with a 317 gr boolit which is more accurate then the 378 gr. The group in the center is 5 shots.

looks like that 45-70 is shooting good for you with 30 grains of 4759:drinks:
hows the recoil?
my Contender is shooting the 350 Ranch Dogs very good too with 30 grains of SR4759

Jeff, recoil is much less then a hot .44. Fully loaded with the Ultra Dot and sling, you are looking at 6#. Not much different then some rifles or shotguns. It is really pleasant to shoot and with the 1 in 14" twist, it will shoot about any boolit.
I have never shot any 45-70 rifle that will match it for accuracy.

Jeff, here are the powder charges for my different bullet/boolits.
Hornady 300 gr--32.5 gr of 4759
317 gr--31 gr
330 gr--31.5 gr
448 gr--26 gr
378 gr--30 gr
420 gr--28.5 gr
360 and 350 gr--30 gr
4759 is the ONLY powder that really works in the shorter barrels.

thanks for the data

im going to try some 300 grainers sometime down the road but i only have a 350 grain Ranch Dog mold.maybe i will buy some 300 grain Remington or Sierra bullets just to see how they shoot.i bet my SSK barrel will shoot them as good as the Ranch Dogs

good hunting to you:mrgreen:
