Well, one good thing about all this Corona crap, I finally got around to doing stuff that I've been putting off for years. I spent the last two days in the garage making 30 and 35 cal gas check punches. I just followed the instructions from Dima Prok (sp?) and made a few little dimensional changes as per my needs and twa-laa, gas checks a gogo. Not difficult at all. I'll make up a set for 458 rifle tomorrow and maybe 25 cal after that.

Pretty darned cool, saves me about $.03/round. Doesn't sound like much? That's the cost of a primer! Or in other words, 1/3 the cost of a loaded round. I know, that's all subjective and depends on time spent and raw materials, but I feel good about it and that's what matters.

Got a link to the gas check maker you used for your prototype?

I bought my CheckMakers from PatMarlins and tried to wear them out (22, 30, 35, 45) with several plain base check makers. After I started powder coating I don't use checks on anything but 30 cal. 22 was pretty much a PITA, but now I am using an NOE 225-62 RN PB designed just for PC. I still like making checks, I just don't shoot many checked boolits.

So, you shoot your gas checked bullets without a gas check? How does that work? I've turned to gas checking and sizing, then powder coating with a wiped off base, then re-sizing.

And I hate to admit it, but I don't use lead in any of my 22 or 6mm stuff. Tried it, but just did not like my results. To me, and maybe only me, the little calibers are meant to be pushed hard (typically over 3K FPS), just not something that lends itself to lead.

The NOE mold for 223/5.56 doesn't take a gas check. The only things I load with checks are 308 W, occasional 357, and 41 Magnum. I get 2250 fps from the AR 15 and Mini 14, and 2450 from a 24" single shot. The powder coated lead is devastating on tin cans, but doesn't tear up steel plates. I have a plain based 30 cal boolit mold that doesn't get used much because 100 grains doesn't do my 308 rifles justice. Some folks shoot powder coated without checks but I don't. I make my own checks so why not use them?

WooHoo, I managed to finish the 45 cal check maker. One to go, 25 cal.
